The nopCommerce platform has been the foundation for B2C and B2B solutions we've developed for our clients over the past 8 years. Their highly extensible plugin architecture has stood the test of time, and continues to evolve on the latest Microsoft tech stack. As a digital agency we design and develop solutions for a broad range of vertical markets. This requires an ecommerce platform that can easily adapt to different types of product catalogs, checkout workflows, and CRM and ERP integrations. nopCommerce provides a solution that allows us to tailor each system to the exact needs of our client. The open-source nature of the code base is reassuring to regulated industries that require full transparency.

Pros

  • The nopCommerce team has created a platform that can be extended to solve a broad range of ecommerce needs. Rather than trying to force a client's business requirements to adapt to the solution, the solution can be customized to meet their goals. We are able to do this in a way that still allows upgrades in the future!
  • The nopCommerce platform roadmap is heavily based on feedback from the development community and from customers. They actively engage developers and end-users in discussions regarding new features and technology.

Cons

  • The nopCommerce team has been consistent at providing frequent release updates. Third-party plugins require upgrading when a new release is launched. Some plugin vendors lag behind by a few weeks which can cause delays if you need to leverage new functionality right away. The good news is that many plugin vendors offer an option to purchase source code so that you can do the upgrade yourself, if needed right away.
  • CMS functionality is very basic if you want to manage a lot of robust content pages. We solve this with an in-house plugin that we developed to extend this functionality.

The nopCommerce solution is designed to adapt to you, not the other way around. The platform works best when you partner with a solution provider like ourselves. A one-person shop will likely find less value in a platform like this if they're looking to spin up a small ecommerce site with just a few button clicks.

NopCommerce is not good when someone wants to use it for a CMS / Content-specific website but it is excellent where customers want to run their own eCommerce stores and at the same time they want the ability to control features because they own the source code for this solution which is a major plus point of using nopCommerce.
An experienced developer can build an eCommerce website, B2B and B2C websites using nopCommerce as well as they can use the solution as a base for other web-based applications because you get a lot of features ready-made with nopCommerce source code.

Pros

  • Excellent modular architecture, which makes it very easy to customize for different kinds of needs.
  • It is open source, free and is constantly updated to keep it up to the latest technologies.
  • The latest version in ASP.NET Core runs in Windows and Linux with excellent performance (Google Page Speed of 100/100).
  • It has a very active community which helps to enhance the solution, develop extensions and themes and helps other users.

So it is used across the whole organization. We have a variety of clients that, by using nopCommerce implemented by us, are able to sell any type of products and services. We also personalize the store to address companies visual identity as well as code customization to implement custom features.

nopCommerce is well suited if you want to get a virtual store running quickly and with an easy setup. You can deploy it, add products and configure your store in a short period of time. Customization can take some time and it is not trivial for final users. Since it is an open source platform, you can use it to address a lot of problems, but you will need to code a little bit to get everything up and running.

We are currently using nopCommerce for its cart and coupon functionality. It is a very robust and supported platform that saved us from trying to reinvent the wheel. We have some basic needs to offer products and services for sale with the ability to offer specials and coupons. One would think this would be more widely available on the market, but it just isn't, which is why we chose this solution.

  • Easy to integrate most merchant services with
  • Robust couponing engine

Cons

  • More community templates would be great.
  • Some of the pricing can be a bit tricky, especially configured items... there is a likelihood of mispriced items with the current structure

I think nopCommerce is great for most small to midsize companies. I have used it with over 1,000,000 products and it holds up very well. The underlying SEO structure is pretty solid, so you are not heading down a path like people do with something like WordPress, where you know you will have to migrate in 6 months...

We use nopCommerce as our ecommerce platform. It is used by the IT/web team and the marketing team. It made it much easier to update and add products to the site compared to our previous platform which was built in house.

  • Easily create category pages

Cons

  • Documentation is lackluster
  • Settings and configurations can be difficult to understand and set up, especially for marketers or people without a strong tech/IT background

nopCommerce is used as a base e-Commerce framework for one of my clients to implement and online e-Commerce portal (http://www.luxegourmets.com). I'm a technical lead responsible for implementing the whole e-Commerce portal. All features that come with nopCommerce are industry standard and we're using all the features. We're using the nopCommerce framework for a public facing B2C e-Commerce portal. Because nopCommerce is an open sourced framework, we're also able to make modifications and additional enhancements according to our business needs.

Pros

  • As I came from Microsoft .Net technical experience with more than 15 years in IT industry, the nopCommerce .Net based open sourced framework is the best eCommerce framework in terms of architectural perspective - such as incorporating with Entity Framework code first approach, Domain Driven Architecture, using ASP.Net MVC, Unit Testing, ...etc.
  • When my client asked for an eCommerce portal, the whole team was struggling from designing a database to identifying the requirements. nopCommerce has everything we need. All the industrial standard eCommerce features are included. It saves hours of database design, application design and also the client's requirements are easily fit into nopCommerce's features.
  • The cost of nopCommerce- the last time we paid was a $200 one time cost for using the production site. It was ridiculously cost effective. As it is opened source, the whole community is supporting and constantly making this framework better and better.
  • I set up a web site within a week using nopCommerce to sell my own products online. It was so easy to use, deploy, and set up.

Cons

  • nopCommerce is for .Net, MVC and EntityFramework technical engineers if you want to make some modifications and add your own enhancements. Therefore, it is the best for a Windows server infrastructure environment. This is not PHP or JAVA. This is all Microsoft and .Net.
  • The version I'm using is nopCommerce 3.40. Current version is 3.80. There are a few features that are not available out of the box; such as incorporating different tracking number for multiple shipments, splitting order and payment into multiple shipments at the checkout page.
  • nopCommerce is the best for small and medium size business (SME). It will not able to handle incoming traffic like Amazon or Alibaba in terms of performance.

If you're looking for a small or medium size eCommerce portal, nopCommerce is the best framework.
1. Cost = open sourced framework. You will just simply bypass the application design and development process, but you will have to code to do whatever you want to do for your business needs. It will save you a lot of time and money.
2. Technical Architecture = It was created with the best application design and architecture. If you are not into eCommerce, but want to understand EntityFrame code first and domain architecture, Dependency Injection,..etc, nopCommerce is the one.
3. I'm sure your business users will ask for the features that are already included with nopCommerce.

  • Very big and active community. The community forum provides free support.
  • Current marketplace offers more than thousand plug-ins and themes.
  • nopCommerce can be downloaded, installed and used free of charge.
  • Program had been translated to 30 languages.

  • Plugins update from plugins area.

nopCommerce is an extensible e-commerce platform. We are using it as a front end e-commerce store and we have extended it to use it as a POS in our brick and mortar stores. It is being used across the whole organization. The nopCommerce front end is extended to integrate with Openbravo an open source ERP. This provides seamless inventory management between [our] online shop and offline shops.

  • Well structured code helps in extending and customizing the software
  • All the features and functionality required by an ecommerce business is available out of the box
  • Availability of dotnet developers and the community is an added strength

Cons

  • Provide more themes; more mobile themes are needed.
  • Steep learning curve for code customization
  • Lower adaptation in the industry, though growing.

Most Appropriate:
1. If the default theme serves your purpose, then nopCommerce is the software for you.
2. A very fast loading software!
Less Appropriate:
1. If you need customization and extension and if you don't have access to dotnet developers, you might find it difficult to handle nopcomerce.
