Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Planful for budgeting and forecasting. It is an easy-to-use tool with some good reporting capabilities. It allows us to perform a monthly budget-to-actuals analysis and prepare quarterly reforecasts.

Pros

Easy to import data.
Easy to build reports.
Easy to integrate with Oracle Netsuite.

Cons

Incorporate more of the agentic AI features into base product.

Likelihood to Recommend

It would be a 10 if they included more agentic AI in the base product.

Large multi-site operation organization, 900+ locations. Used for annual budgeting, rolling forecasts, monthly variance and trend analysis, monthly reporting and distributing P&Ls.

Likelihood to Recommend

Great for companies that have a defined structure and are scaling. Ability to distribute reports across people is very good. In more nuanced companies with many locations system limitations can create processing strain.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We're using Planful for all forecasting and comparisons of actuals against Forecast and Budget. We're using it for (almost) all reporting sent from our Finance departments, including monthly automated report packets to different teams/stakeholders. One of the primary reasons for implementing Planful was to eliminate challenges related to File Access, Versioning, and View vs Write access to Forecast and Budgets that we used to have in Excel. The 2nd primary reason was that we were outgrowing Excel in wanting to Bgt/FCast by Territory/Location. We're still working towards that with Planful, but it's no longer a systems limitation.

Pros

Dynamic Reporting is powerful and cloud scheduler saves time.
The ability to use Report and Column sets to build a report once, save versions of it with different RS/CS's applied for different audiences.
Calc Accounts and Custom Members for repeated use

Cons

WFP seems to have limitations, even after having WFP PRO, in how you can report on data, Salary Increases as an example and how the DLR works (we have been burned multiple times and no longer use DLR for WFP). There isn't a way to set/save a filter, sorting by Employee Name and making a change, required you to sort by Employee Name again...
Many of our reports lose data as we close months. We've explored this with both Bakerfield and PAM team and are told it's just 'how it works' which is baffling for a solution this robust.
Dashboards have some frustrating/limitations. You can't do a trend line on a graph. You can't include Dashboards in Report Collection/Packets and send them via CloudScheduler.

There are still times that I find myself thinking that "I would have been done with this already" in Excel. Most (possibly all) the colleagues I know in our industry haven't outgrown using Excel yet... Overall, now that I feel I (mostly) "know what I'm doing" and am thru the learning stage the system I'm seeing benefit...however also feel like I haven't 'scratched the surface' of what it's capable of. Dynamic Planning, Predict/Signals, AI ...I feel we have a huge learning curve still ahead. I've explored Signals and AI Analyst and haven't been able to get reliable results to drive me to use it more...which leads me to believe we have core implementation related issues.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Planful for daily operations, data storage, internal reporting, and various types of analysis. The system allows us to have all our data in one system that can be trusted by everyone who uses it. It also allows us to have our data secured and private. The system also allows us to personalize it to meet our needs. Planful is at the center of my position's responsibilities, as it provides all the necessary data.

Speed when data becomes too large.
Interface personalization.
Dashboard limitation.

Planful is generally well-suited for mid-sized organizations that want to improve budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and financial consolidation processes while still maintaining familiarity with Excel-based workflows. Planful may be less appropriate for organizations with highly complex operational modeling needs, as well as for companies experiencing very high growth, due to the system's speed limitations when data becomes too large.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Planful has allowed our FP&A org to be able to slice and customize data in a more organized and efficient manner than what we've previously had to do. It's given trust to our executive team that the data is correct and accurate, all the while providing reporting on a more timely basis.

If your organization requires customizable features that will allow you to report on various metrics, Planful is great, as you're able to customize almost anything. For organizations that are just looking for something right out of the box, they would find Planful more difficult to manage and use. Overall, I'd recommend Planful to most companies that are looking to get started using a FP&A/reporting tool.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Helps us with dynamic reporting, with an ability to click into underlying detail to not only audit, but also help explain variances, improve performance and drive operators towards better outcomes by having the data at our fingertips.

Pros

Dynamic reporting - easy to drag and drop and create reports in web
Auditability - can click into transaction level detail from ERP
Consolidation - manual topside adjustments over ERP

Cons

Spotlight I find not as intuitive as web
Didn't use for budget this year for many reasons but not as dynamic as excel
Workforce solution I haven't found to be as helpful as an ADP user

Where accounting is messy (earlier stage, etc.) and reporting layer needs to have an ability to not only report but audit and help with input. Ability to manual adjust items over the top of ERP is helpful. Love how easy the sync is to the ERP - takes no time and can update frequently. Love the drag and drop reports - very intuitive.

We use Planful for our consolidated financial reporting and FP&A. It helps us with creating a high-level view of the business and allows us to be very flexible in our reporting and KPI reporting.

Pros

Build customizable reports.
Integrate both financial and non-financial data.
Serves as a database for our headcount planning.

Cons

Implementation was a little more challenging than we expected.
Report creation and configuration can be difficult.

Likelihood to Recommend

Planful is well-suited for large organizations with strong accounting and finance teams that can navigate the ongoing maintenance. I have personally found that there is a lot that can be done more quickly with other tools, so for smaller organizations looking for more out-of-the-box solutions, I would recommend other tools.

We use Planful as our budgeting and consolidation software for our whole company which is comprised of many legal entities and multiple ERP systems. By having a single source to consolidate all of our financial information, it has vastly improved our reporting and budgeting process to where we can spend more time analyzing the results.

Limited visualizations. There is a dashboard with basic visualizations but they are limited. Additionally, its very difficult to include visuals in a report collection distribution.

Likelihood to Recommend

Planful is well suited as a planning, consolidation reporting tool for business with multiple ERP systems that eliminates the need for Excel spreadsheets that are time consuming to produce and very error prone. Being able to automatically produce a full set of financial statements and budgets and forecasts has allowed management to spend more time analysis.

Planful can be limited however if you need more real-time data.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have 3 separate companies with 3 separate ERP systems. Planful is our consolidation tool so that we can consolidate all the financial data seamlessly. Also, we utilize Planful for budget and forecasting.

Planful has helped my organization immensely to cut down on the manual process of our financial reporting process for each month. We have set up API connections so that most of our reports we can just refresh the new month and I have ease of mind that all the data presented is accurate so it is pulled directly from each ERP system.
