What is Railway?
Railway is an infrastructure platform for deploying applications, databases, and background jobs without requiring teams to manage servers or create infrastructure-as-code configurations. Developers can connect a GitHub repository or Docker image, after which Railway manages builds, networking, Transport Layer Security (TLS), scaling, and observability. These deployment capabilities are available to coding agents through a first-party Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and a non-interactive command-line interface (CLI), supporting AI-assisted development workflows. Railway operates its own bare-metal infrastructure across multiple geographic regions.
Key features
- Instant deployments — deploy from a Git push, Docker image, or CLI command, with automated build configuration.
- Agent tooling — a first-party MCP server allows supported coding agents, including Claude Code and Cursor, to create projects, deploy services, manage environment variables, read logs, and investigate failures; the CLI supports non-interactive operation for automated workflows.
- Managed data services — provision PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, and ClickHouse, with support for persistent volumes and object storageEnvironments and PR previews — create isolated, full-stack environments for individual branches or pull requests.
- Private networking — connect services through an encrypted private network with service discovery and TLS.
- Built-in observability — access logs, metrics, and alerts through the dashboard, CLI, or programmatic interfacesBenefits and ROI.
Railway is designed to reduce the infrastructure configuration and maintenance work required during application deployment. Build, deployment, diagnostic, and scaling operations can be automated through the MCP server and CLI, allowing coding agents to perform deployment workflows within configured permissions and organizational controls. Usage-based pricing charges for consumed resources, while scale-to-zero options can reduce costs for intermittent or variable workloads.
Differentiators
Railway does not require YAML, Terraform, or Kubernetes configuration for standard deployment workflows. Infrastructure can be configured through a visual project canvas or programmatically, with changes reflected across both interfaces. Railway provides structured APIs, machine-readable documentation, a non-interactive CLI, and an MCP integration for agent-operated infrastructure workflows. The company also owns and operates its underlying hardware rather than deploying exclusively through third-party hyperscale cloud providers.
