Red Hat Satellite Review - July 2026

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Hi,
We mainly use RH Satellite as a repo to patch our RHEL servers, to manage our licences and we alose created some local subscriptions, such as EPEL.
We also, use it with AAP to automate our monthly OS patching.
In the coming weeks, we will start deploying capsules in the cloud(GCP) to reduce traffic between our head office, and our clouds servers around the world.

Pros

  • Managing the subscriptions/licences
  • The way it manage the content view by OS version
  • The Red Hat Lightspeed, we are starting to use it with Insights.

Cons

  • I must say that AAP is getting harder to maintaing compared to Tower ;-)
  • We don`t like the new way to calculate the licences

Return on Investment

  • With APP modules, we were able to speed up our pathing
  • The way the content views are managed help us a lot, we have a lot of SAP and non-SAP machines

Usability

Alternatives Considered

Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and Red Hat Lightspeed

Other Software Used

Commvault Cloud powered by Metallic AI, SecureCRT, Nagios XI

Extremely good at what it does

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have several servers that require we stagger patching schedules as well as hold packages back and test. All this has to be done with no direct internet connection. Red Hat Satellite allows us this flexibility and more. It's truly been a wonderful thing for our environment.

Pros

  • Patch Staging
  • Customized Software Repositories
  • Version Control of Repositories

Cons

  • I woud love for it to provide the same functionality for non-RHEL OS's
  • Containerized Installation
  • Simplified workflow setup

Return on Investment

  • We have been able to automate the update process to not require after-hours monitoring.
  • Centralizing updates has greatly reduced the overall time servers are down and processing their individual updates.
  • We are able to bring our own RPM packages in and stage them in the same deployment model as official Red Hat packages.

Usability

Other Software Used

Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, Red Hat OpenShift, Kubuntu

My Red Hat Satellite Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to manage patches, etc. on internal servers that are not directly attached to the internet. We also use it to ensure that every server in those various clusters get the exact same patches and versions, etc. This allows us to ensure that the servers are as identical as possible.

Pros

  • Patches
  • License Management
  • Dashboards / Visibility

Cons

  • Some things are confusing for new users of the platform
  • More dashboards
  • A more user friendly GUI

Return on Investment

  • Flexibility
  • Visibility
  • Security Awareness
