SAP MaxDB

SAP MaxDB is a database management system developed and supported by SAP SE. For SAP customers and applications, it is presented by SAP as a less expensive alternative, and it is available for a company's own or third-party applications as well. It is a database management system for medium to large server configurations and for a desktop or laptop database management system, as a solution that is offered by SAP as easy to install and operate.

It has built-in self-administering features, and is available for operating systems that include Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Unix. It is a relational database management system (RDBMS).

SAP states that about 20,000 SAP customer installations run on SAP MaxDB and SAP liveCache technology proving SAP MaxDB's reliability, scalability and availability for configurations of all sizes. SAP MaxDB is also widely used within SAP, for example for the Service Marketplace, SAP Content Server, and also SCN runs on SAP MaxDB. SCN currently is one of the largest SAP NetWeaver Portal implementation with far more than 1,000,000 named users, and it runs on SAP MaxDB and Linux-x64.

If an organization's SAP solution will run on SAP MaxDB the current license fee is 5% of the SAP application value (SAV). If SAP MaxDB technology is part of a bundled offering for instance like the SAP NetWeaver Full Use License or as SAP liveCache technology as part of SAP Supply Chain Management it comes without additional license costs. And to run SAP MaxDB for an organization's own or third-party applications, the SAP MaxDB Community Edition that is bound to SAP's community license is available. SAP MaxDB for non-SAP applications can be used while bound to a community license, free of charge.

SAP MaxDB also directly supports the use of several third-party backup tools.
