ShareFile was founded in 2005 in Raleigh, North Carolina by Jesse Lipson as an independent, bootstrapped file-sharing company. Citrix Systems acquired it in October 2011 and sold it as a Citrix product for more than a decade. After Vista Equity Partners and Elliott Investment Management took Citrix private in 2022 and combined it with TIBCO as Cloud Software Group, CSG ran ShareFile from 2023 as a standalone business unit while preparing it for sale. Progress Software acquired ShareFile from Cloud Software Group on October 31, 2024 for $875 million, and the product is now Progress ShareFile.
