We use Smarty for address standardization in our project. Currently the scope is limited to standardization, but we would expand it to other features Smarty provides like geolocation, vacant lot etc.

We have used Smarty at the Parkinson's Foundation for a few years now. We needed to make registration and donating quicker and easier for our constituents. Smarty delivers this by displaying full address options in a dropdown after a couple of characters are typed into the first line of the address. This saves time from the user having to populate the address fields manually. With well over a million constituents in our database, this saves a lot of time and is well worth the investment.

Pros

  • Populates full address results for the user after only a few characters are entered
  • The addresses are validated against USPS and Non-USPS datasets
  • Supports international address verification

Cons

  • Wish that the Smarty package levels were a little more flexible.
  • Current package purchase provides more than enough address searches, but the package tier below is to low for us.

  • For the annual investment the foundation makes this is more than compensated by the power of the tool.
  • Our constituents are the life and soul of the foundations goals and giving them a tool that makes their online experience easier is well worth it.

We use Smarty in two application areas: e-commerce and in-store point-of-sale. As a retail business that ships most of our products, it is imperative that we capture customers' shipping address information as accurately as possible. Previously, we had a time-consuming process for verifying address information before shipping. This still resulted in missed shipments and delayed deliveries. With the integration of Smarty to our platforms, we have increased data input accuracy with little to no impact on customers. The result is vastly improved data accuracy and improved deliverability of shipped products.

Cons

  • The cost/hit for type-ahead lookups. We have people "try" a lot of addresses, which drives up the cost of obviously wrong data input.

  • Vastly improved our address database deliverability. We now have over 95% of addresses in our customer database verified, thanks to Smarty.
  • Our bi-annual catalog cost went down. Already-verified address = lower cost for pre-mailing address correction and verification.
