Spree Commerce is widely used as an e-commerce platform by businesses selling products globally. Its primary use case is serving as a storefront for websites, allowing customers to make transactions seamlessly. According to user experiences, Spree is utilized by marketing and selling departments to efficiently manage their e-commerce operations. The platform also extends its functionality to HR departments, enabling them to post and track job applications effectively.

In terms of its core function, Spree excels in facilitating website transactions and providing quick access to payments. This has been highly appreciated by users who rely on the platform for seamless and secure financial transactions. Moreover, Spree's support for resellers and wholesale customers makes it suitable for businesses dealing with both physical and non-physical media items.

While Spree offers customization options, it's worth noting that technical skills may be required to fully leverage these capabilities. Additionally, some users have mentioned that the customization options provided by Spree are relatively limited compared to other e-commerce platforms. Nevertheless, the platform continues to be a popular choice due to its overall effectiveness in managing e-commerce operations at a global scale.

Highly Customizable Platform: Many users have praised Spree Commerce for its highly customizable platform that allows them to create visually appealing and unique online stores. They appreciate the ability to customize various aspects of their store's design and layout, giving them a competitive edge in the e-commerce market.

This makes it easy for businesses to adapt their online store as their needs change and grow over time. Whether it's adjusting product listings, adding new features, or expanding into new markets, Spree Commerce provides the necessary tools to support business growth and evolution.

Open-source Advantage: Developers find Spree Commerce particularly useful due to its open-source nature, which provides them with more freedom and control over the software. It also fosters collaboration within the developer community, enabling knowledge sharing and continuous improvement of the platform.

Limited Design Customization: Some users may find the design customization options on Spree Commerce challenging, particularly if they have limited technical knowledge or resources. This can make it difficult for them to personalize their online store according to their specific preferences and branding.

Lack of Innovation in Design: The design options on Spree Commerce may be limited compared to other e-commerce platforms. This can be a drawback for businesses that require more complex or unique designs to stand out from competitors and provide a visually appealing shopping experience for their customers.

Spree is being used by our eCommerce department. We built our online store on this platform and we utilize it to support re-sellers and wholesale customers as well. Our business sells physical media items like books, CDs, DVDs in addition to non-physical media items like MP3's, eBooks, and PDF downloads. This eCommerce platform is the primary tool that supports this line of business.
  • Adaptability of the platform
  • Open source code base.
Cons
  • Not enough out of the box options
  • CMS is clunky at times
Spree is a great solution if you have a highly customized business idea and need a very robust eCommerce solution to support your very creative and detailed sales methods. Because it's an open source platform, there are a ton of ways that his platform can be customized to meet virtually any business idea that you can dream up. With that said, the platform requires dedicated development support to make sure everything is stable and supported at all times.

  • Allowed us to customize business practices
  • Expensive to support from a developer standpoint
Spree is probably the most robust of the platforms that we evaluated. Because it is HIGHLY customizable, you can virtually build anything that you can dream up from a business perspective. At that point, you are probably going to need a very dedicated development team to support whatever business that you have created.

We use Spree for all of our website transactions. It is basically the shopping cart function that allows a customer to pay for goods, then the funds are transferred to our accounts. We do not use it for wholesale business, only eCommerce. It helps us gain quick access to payments.
  • Quick and easy access, nice interface when logging in.
  • Access to customer's info, easy to change user names and passwords when issues arise with login.
  • Easy to use for the most part - a lot of ways to search for information regarding customer's info.
Cons
  • Searching by email is difficult sometimes. There is no way to sort customer lists by most recently logins, etc. It can cause lengthy searches when trying to locate.
  • Issues with hackers, security seems low at times - firewalls need to be improved.
  • There needs to be more search fields for things like phone numbers, addresses, etc.
My favorite scenario is when a customer calls and doesn't know their login for our website. We sell snowboards, very seasonal, so people tend to forget login and password info quite a bit. No need to send a reset or anything along those lines - I can reset the password and immediately tell them the update. Super easy!

  • We've had some issues with hackers, Spree did a good job to improve security so that customer info is protected.
  • We can really cut down on phone time with customer info updates, allowing for us to on more important tasks
  • We can search for customers, previous orders, etc. With our old ERP system, we didn't have that option, we now have that on both Spree and Netsuite.

Spree is used as our e-commerce platform and applicant tracking system. Our marketing and selling department manages the e-commerce side, while HR is in charge of posting and tracking jobs and applications.
  • Simple platform to post jobs
  • Straightforward record of job applications
Cons
  • For the ATS portion, ability to download applicants would be helpful
  • We have to use our developers to change some simple things on the web format
I believe it fits the needs of small businesses. I can't imagine our version supporting a larger enterprise, but I could be wrong about how it's used.

How we use Spree

Rating: 10 out of 10
April 15, 2016
Spree is a shopping cart and is used on our website Lovemomiji.com. We are an e-commerce business selling Momiji dolls globally from two hubs at the time of writing - UK & USA.
  • Highly customisable. Allowed our developers to generate a unique and flexible front end and cart facility.
  • We handle 2 warehouses and plan to add several more.
  • We use 13 currencies to cater for our main markets.
Cons
  • No particular weaknesses reported by our developers. They are using Spree on other sites too.
  • Back end is visually ok rather than cutting edge design but functionality is all there.
I can only really comment on our usage which is B2C where it is very good.

  • Spree is a shopping cart and so is back-office. The key point is that it allowed us to build a fully customised front end which has allowed us to increase sales dramatically as part of an overall marketing strategy.
  • It is robust and copes with our peak loading.
  • Promotions are flexible but may need initial developer input to customise for a particular business.
I don't want to knock other products but let's say that the more famous shopping carts, although they have great functionality off the peg, are limited in terms of branding ability and further customisation. Invariably you get a site which looks and feels like many others. This will suit many companies as a low cost option which is very competent. However the fully customisable front end that we need, and will continue to develop, is not possible with these turn-key solutions.

Easy to get up and running.

Spree is used as the storefront for our website.
  • Payment gateways.
  • Promotions.
  • Uses prevailing software patterns.
Cons
  • The return process is clunky.
  • Performance when changing the contents of the cart.
  • Needs very detailed documentation as to how calculations are made. For example, tax totals, shipping totals, etc.
Spree is great if you're running a standard e-commerce business and want to have a customized site and experience. Deviating from in small ways is fine, but if you want to start slicing off functionality, like inventory, shipping, etc. it's a real pain.
