Stata is an excellent choice

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use it to analyze data from students and professors in academic research. Stata allows me to analyze data fast, in comparison to SPSS. I usually have datasets in the N=200 to 1000 range. I also use it to generate charts and graphs. It integrates with MPlus and R as necessary.

Pros

  • Extremely fast bootstrapping
  • Thorough readable documentation for each function
  • Personalized, rapid help through Statalist
  • Wide range of analytical options

Cons

  • The documentation can be too lengthy in some cases.
  • Some commands are near duplicates of one another
  • Multilevel SEM would be nice

Return on Investment

  • Create usable tables and charts
  • Have a relatively low cost
  • Allow me to answer research questions

Alternatives Considered

IBM SPSS Statistics

Stata for Data management statistics and graphics

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Stata extensively on research projects, several of which are supported by external grants. I teach applied econometrics courses in which I illustrate Stata use for undergrads and PhD students. We require Stata Labs for all undergrads in our required Statistics and Econometric Methods courses for Econ majors.

Pros

  • Panel data management and estimation
  • Validation and transfpformation of external data
  • Script-based execution that provides audit trails
  • Capability of extending the language with user-written routines

Cons

  • Built-in table language very difficult to use
  • Optimization routines sometimes fail to converge

Return on Investment

  • Provided students with valuable analytic skills for data science
  • Provided researchers with reproducible findings

Stata in Economic Research

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Stata to conduct analysis in economic research. It helps me clean the data, format the data and run the necessary analysis.

Pros

  • Stata is good at plotting the data.
  • Stata is good at showing the results of the analysis in a detailed way.
  • Stata is good at providing detailed help files.
  • Stata is good at merging many datasets.

Cons

  • Stata's error codes are hard to understand.
  • It takes a long time to add captions or written information on the figures generated with Stata.
  • It is not easy to export stata generated tables to latex exactly as I want. I always need to change things manually instead of automating the whole process.

Return on Investment

  • Stata helps me to conduct economic research. But it is not great for collaborating and it is not a very interactive tool.
