Practical Law Review.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Legal research and staying on top of new news in my arena: Search for specific content related to new legislation and case law; see if there are any trends related to new legal issues; and get updated on legal news, not in my area of specialty.

Pros

  • News articles.
  • Specific content on areas of law.
  • Research jury verdicts and dispositive motions decisions.

Cons

  • Easier interface.
  • More searchable features.
  • Cost

Likelihood to Recommend

Legal research on specific laws and regulations in city, county, state, and federal venues. Since we have operations in virtually every state, nationwide content is very important to our organization to ensure we stay on top of new legislation and developments.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Practical Law is used by our legal department to access precedents, decisions and other legal resources for both our internal and external needs. Having access to a resource like Practical Law gives our legal team the confidence that we are using updated forms, checklists to ensure we are compliant and providing value to our organizations.

Pros

  • Real decisions from the courts
  • Practical guidance from top practitioners
  • Updated forms for different practice areas
  • Overall solid coverage for my legal needs

Cons

  • Navigation can get tricky with some scenarios
  • Some of the features can be offered for free as opposed to paid
  • Sometimes there are precedents and forms that are not updated

Likelihood to Recommend

PracticalLaw offers excellent Practice Notes, Checklists, Precedents, and Toolkits for a variety of practice areas - which is very helpful to in-house counsel and law clerks that are working on files across different practice areas.

Less appropriate when there are already many resources available to me to help in drafting documents - then there is not much use to look up PLC.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Practical law is used as an educational tool. It contains a lot of resources to help guide users through the various areas of law: entertainment, labor and employment, real estate, etc. It contains articles, guides, templates, examples...and serves as a great how to guide if you happen to be starting out.

Most of the professors and students use it, and a lot of our transactional instruction relies on practical law guides and templates.

Pros

  • Resource guides
  • Practical tips from practitioners
  • Templates
  • Recent articles and news

Cons

  • Some resources are more detailed and on point than others
  • Competitors offer platforms that are more user-friendly
  • Sometimes navigating back to an old resource takes a bit more time than other platforms

Likelihood to Recommend

It is great for most, general high-level tasks. If you need something more specific in a particular area, however, there may be better guides elsewhere. Though the materials are a great starting point, it still requires additional review and modification to suit your needs. Not all things are on point, but it's a great starting point.
