Unique Learning System has everything my self-contained classroom needs

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Finally, a curriculum made for the self-contained classroom! I love the flexibility of the program because my students can do it on the interactive display as a whole group lesson, printed to work on as a small group, or on their individual laptops to work on individually. I love the ability to set their levels and differentiate instruction with embedded tools. I love the cross-curricular model with science and social studies standards woven into reading, writing, and math lessons, so that students are truly able to receive instruction that is aligned to grade-level standards in all subjects. My students have grown so much because of the tools that Unique Learning System provides, and it saves me so much time in paperwork, grading, and writing reports. I am constantly discovering new features that save me time and effort. This year we have started using the benchmark feature for beginning of year, middle of year, and end of year testing, and I discovered that doing this, present level statements are generated for me to copy and paste into their annual paperwork. The unit checkpoints help my students prepare for the state standardized testing by providing a similar format. If you are tired of cobbling together an array of resources, then look no further. This is your one-stop-shop for all self-contained curriculum needs.

Pros

  • Provides benchmark tools and present level statements
  • Includes cross-curricular lessons that align to grade-level standards
  • Differentiation tools are embedded in every piece
  • Allows for use in a variety of ways to reach different students' response modes

Cons

  • The reports - I want everything on one spreadsheet for the class instead of each student/data point being on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Science and Social Studies activities to go along with the unit lessons - we need more!
  • The checkpoints - please don't tie the results to a specific year. We cannot follow the units in order, so I have to dig into previous years graphs to find results from checkpoints taken today.
  • The checkpoints - If a student doesn't complete it, it does not save your progress. In all other areas (benchmarks, unit activities, etc) it saves their progress so they can pick back up and carry on.

Return on Investment

  • Unique Learning System saves time in planning and gathering resources
  • Unique Learning System helps gather and report data for IEP meetings
  • Unique Learning System has embedded modifications and supports, which saves preparation time
  • Unique Learning System provides for a variety of response modes

I use Unique Learning System for benchmark assessment and the progress monitor growth in may students. It also gives my students developmentally appropriate games that help them better access their education. It gives special education teachers another tool to use to support their students who often do not have the necessary resources in the general education setting to receive their free and appropriate education.

Pros

  • stories
  • science of reading
  • L3 skills - games

Cons

  • usability of reports
  • science lessons
  • social studies
  • AI integration

Return on Investment

  • helps with planning
  • give me IEP data and am able to track it inside Unique Learning System
  • I have seen a lot of students grow as a result of the platform.

Usability

Great Program

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Unique Learning System as a curriculum for my severe profound students. When I first started teaching I had to adapt all of the curriculum while aligning it to standards. Now, Unique Learning System helps me have already adapted lessons and materials for my students. I have some students with vision impairments who need additional modifications/real objects, but overall it saves me significant time in planning and implementation.

Pros

  • The books at various levels so all students can access the materials.
  • Having Symbolstix so I can create additional worksheets/adapted materials (such as vocab word/definition cards) easily and have them align to the visuals in the books/communication boards.
  • I love being able to access the material in print, projection, on laptops, and have it all the same.

Cons

  • I would love to see Unique Learning System provide visually adapted books with high contrast backgrounds/Roman word bubbling to support students with visual impairments.
  • I would love to have Unique Learning System as an iPad app so my youngest/neediest learners can access it digitally using just their finger with no keypad to distract them.
  • I would like if the resources (I'm specifically thinking of the math ones) were able to be printed with no background pictures so there is no extra visual clutter.
  • I would love if the lessons could also be modified for visual impairments with high contrast counting, letters, etc.

Return on Investment

  • The benchmarks have helped significantly with tracking student progress for IEPs.
  • I love that the curriculum is there and aligns to a theme that can be expanded to be more hands on. I usually expand the theme to create a bulletin board with hands on crafts and experiences to further expand learning and understanding.

A lifesaver

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I work in a self-contained autism class that participated in the state alternate assessment. Unique Learning System (ULS) is the foundation of the curriculum I teach. I would be lost without Unique Learning System. It provides a leveled system for differentiation. This provides the supports that students need in order to be successful. Unique Learning System also provides access to SymbolStix which can be used for additional picture supports and creating communication boards for students who are non-speaking. If I did not have access to Unique Learning System, I would have to create a whole curriculum (all four major content areas) for my students. I only have to provide my students with some supplementals to address IEP goals. The only issue I have with Unique Learning System is that I have to rezoom after answering some activities on the smart board in whole group instruction. I use Unique Learning System daily.

Pros

  • differentiation
  • picture supports
  • Leveled readers

Cons

  • I wish that Unique Learning System would hold the zoom when answering questions in the platform. I consistently have to rezoom.

Return on Investment

  • Time saver (provided curriculum - you are not creating one from the ground up)
  • Has assessments that relate to IEP goals and pre- and post- tests for each unit
  • also has inventories for developing transition plans in the IEP

Could Be Better

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use the program to address the modified grade level curriculum for students that require an alternative curriculum based on cognitive deficits.

Pros

  • Uses modified levels
  • modified grade level standards

Cons

  • too repetitive, can become monotonous; all units are EXACTLY the same
  • Work seems as though there was not much thought put into tasks
  • texts are terrible; boring;
  • data is scattered
  • tasks should have more options
  • needs to be iPad friendly for the targeted students
  • updates to curriculum need to be made
  • more levels than 3 should be implemented
  • there is no change in format; students see one format for each topic

Return on Investment

  • planning time
  • ease of connection to grade level targets
