Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Data backup for both infrastructure (NAS, SAN, VM, ...) and files with host agent installed. We need complete backup software to ensure our company meets legal and internal requirements for backups and archiving.

Pros

  • Backup vmWare infrastructure.
  • Integration with storage systems (Netapp).
  • Fast operations (backup and restore).
  • Data security with encryption.
  • Support of multiple backup hardware.

Cons

  • Integration with third-party disk storage.
  • Old user interface.
  • Adding new features (integration with MS Azure, ...)

Likelihood to Recommend

Backuping complex infrastructures (VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, Oracle, and MSSQL databases, etc.). Regarding product price, it's not the most affordable for small businesses, but it can handle nearly all infrastructures and systems. With good training people, it's a Swiss knife of company data backup, no stress about keeping backups in a safe place!

A Stable product with years of experience in the field

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veritas NetBackup is implemented as a primary tool in the organization for backuping a huge landscape of Aix , Unix and Windows machines. This includes Oracle , DB2 and SQL Databases.

The overall capacity of front end data is close to 1.3 Petabytes scaling across 2 data centers in 2 different regions. They act as a primary and secondary to each other.

We mainly looked at a trusted long timer in the market to be able to invest to ensure the solution is proven to be trusted.

Pros

  • The stablity
  • Overall SImplicity in operations
  • scalablity
  • support for multiple platforms

Cons

  • Maintenance of multiple servers can be a bit of a chore
  • A centeralized operation center with better repoting capablities would have been good

Likelihood to Recommend

The product is very stable and proven in the enterprise environments. We have deployed the solution in multiple customers and have not had negative feedback. The vendor support is top class and very professional. The solution overall has options to be deployed in multiple flavors which allows the easy option in terms of planning the capacity or even Infra scaling.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are use it across our subsidiaries within ICT department and we are managing all backups related to databases and mostly VMWARE environment. We are managing 100s of tape icluding LTO4 and LTO6 for off site backups. More than 100 VMs are protect across the environment which includes thick and thin VMs.

Pros

  • Centralised Backup Solution
  • Easy to use for administrator
  • Expendable in case of storages
  • Hardware Independent
  • Flexible Licenses
  • Reliable Infrastructure
  • Independent storage solution
  • Integration with almost every Database
  • Integration with Virtual Environment
  • Graphical representation of Storage
  • OPS CENTER provide detailed reporting

Cons

  • Admin console
  • SAP HANA application Templates should also be introduced instead of scripting
  • SAP MAXDB application template should also be introduced
  • Tape Management need improvement
  • MOBILE connectivity is missing
  • Admin console is so simple it should be more funcky or stylish
  • Small database should also be considered for backup

Likelihood to Recommend

Netbackup is suited for every environment like Windows, Linux, Suse, Red Hat, Oracle, SQL, SAP, MySQL, Mongo DB, VM, BMR.

For SMEs veritas would be an expensive solution because its an enterprise level solution may not be recommended for smaller organization. Backup administrator with high skill may requied for such solution which is also not affordable by them.

Veritas Netbackup: ultimate king of backup empire

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are MSP and we support various customers' backup operations. We support two customers for Veritas NetBackup. It helps us to address huge exchange and net app workloads. It also helps us to do VMware backups, along with SQL and Oracle backups. We have adapted the remote NDMP technology to leverage the multiplexing of NDMP backups.

Pros

  • SAN data transfer and LAN control transfer for doing VMware backups.
  • Ability to perform restore through both LAN and SAN.

Cons

  • Ability to handle DFSR backups , VSS sometimes does not work .
  • Logs complexity and troubleshooting

Likelihood to Recommend

Veritas NetBackup is well suited to backup huge NDMP workloads through multiplexing where tapes drives are less to accommodate, huge VMware workloads backup can be completed by leveraging SAN data transfer technology and CBT, ability to do exchange. Oracle and SQL backups even if backed up by VMware policy. Very well suited for dissimilar hardware physical server BMR restore. Flash backup for raw file system backup.

It is less suited for DFSR backups, less suited for large changes of daily data, dedupe is not integrated, rather depends upon additional license like MSDP and specific hardware, configuring AIR replication is also very complex.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veritas NetBackup has been used for the last couple of years to back up 30-40 TB of data every single day.

Pros

  • It is an enterprise solution for backups and restores.
  • Backs up and restores data within RTP/RPO, given a stable infrastructure.
  • Cloud backups are fantastic; they have very user-friendly GUI to configure them.

Cons

  • Cloud duplication - It should duplicate data from standard to Glacier without extra read and write.

Likelihood to Recommend

Veritas NetBackup is an excellent product for all kinds of databases, VMS, and file system backups.

Veritas Netbackup, it works.

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It is being used as the enterprise backup solution for all of our backup needs, currently we are using this to backup file shares for the NAS, our Vmware Environment, our physical server environment and our database server environment. We also use it to manage our tape library and our tape environment for all daily and monthly backups.

Pros

  • Upgrades are typically easy and normally have either no issues or very few that are easily resolved (wait a month or 2 before upgrading)
  • Using accelerator for the vm environment works well, and file level restores have been successful
  • Full vm recovery has worked every time
  • Backing up a physical server and restoring to a vm works as described
  • GRT Exchange backups are pretty easy, to setup
  • File level restores are simple

Cons

  • GRT Exchange restores using the ip less dag take a long time to browse for files to restore
  • VM file level restores dont work without a client installed, but the client is not needed for the backup
  • GRT backups can eat up a lot of time for the restore
  • Full VM recovery works but typically you have to remove the nic, and play around with other settings for it to work

Likelihood to Recommend

Veritas Netbackup does work as it is described but sometimes there is some setup information that is not necessarily published or is hard to locate for proper setup. Support is mixed between America and outsourced locations. It is well suited for vm backups using accelerator which speeds up all the vm backups by not sending duplicate data to the storage location.

Backup your Enterprise Servers so you don't have to stay up all night rebuilding.

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

NetBackup is used to perform automated file level and disk level backups of all Enterprise servers. It is primarily used by the IT department but is also available to other departments as a service. The Enterprise Storage team provides this service to allow for the restoration of servers in the event of data loss or corruption. This is an invaluable tool for both business continuity and disaster recovery.

Pros

  • Full Backup
  • Incremental Backup
  • File Level Restore
  • OS level restore for VMware

Cons

  • When an error in the backup process occurs, manual intervention is usually necessary by the Server Administrator.
  • Some Virtual Machine servers cannot be backed up while online.
  • User client is a little clumsy while attempting to access files for restore.

Likelihood to Recommend

NetBackup is a great product for Enterprise Servers managed by a large IT department. It is not the best solution for individual users as it doesn't do the file syncs similar to Microsoft OneDrive. It does a great job of allowing the end user to manage his/her own file restores without having to wait for the Backup Administrator to be involved. However, full OS restores to a separate location are slightly more complex.

We recommend NetBackup to our clients based on reliability, ease of use and accuracy. NetBackup provides secure data retention so necessary because of the increase in malicious network attacks.

Pros

  • Fast and reliable
  • Ease of use
  • Secure backups

Cons

  • I really can't say. It works fine for us as is.

Likelihood to Recommend

<ul><li>Data protection for cloud-based services.</li><li> Excellent interaction with VM and other virtual environments.</li></ul>

Not a new kid on the block!

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It is being used across the whole organization. It provides data protection for mission-critical data to various mediums ranging from tape to vtl.

Pros

  • uses in-house catalog vs database products
  • Netbackup -- Biomni provides self-service backup subscription with a simple to use user interface
  • Agentless backup for virtual servers
  • Connectivity to major cloud service providers.
  • The client can perform self restore from the server

Cons

  • Their user interface could be updated as the user interface has been around for a long time.
  • Advance features are a challenge to configure
  • Media Server MDSP limitation may require proper planning

Likelihood to Recommend

Veritas Self Service is a user-friendly and simple interface where the user can choose from the pre-defined backup policy.

For a new backup administrator, it may pose a challenge to configure advanced features, as to enable the features it requires to go in-depth into settings which are not easy to locate.
