Overall Satisfaction with Azure Application Gateway

We use Azure Application Gateway in our organization when simple load balancing is not enough and application layer load balancing is required. We deploy this product for our production applications because of that and also because it comes with a web application firewall, that allows configuring a highly customizable ruleset.
  • WAF
  • Application layer LB
  • SSL termination
  • There is no annotations for WAF rules, makes it hard to manage
  • WAF
  • URL based routing
  • LB
  • No negative impact
  • Positive impact - save cost on infrastructure
Other load balancing tools in Azure (Azure LB and Azure Traffic Manager) are limited in their functionality in comparison with the Azure Application Gateway, and also, they don't provide security features. Azure Firewall, although it has security features, is more expensive, and most importantly, it's not a load balancer at all.
