Overall Satisfaction with Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)

We primarily use the Cisco ASR 1001-X Router is a small form factor, high horsepower platform for distribution of routing information within our network. It's extremely feature-rich for its size and offers a good 'pay as you grow' model of scalability as our usage of this model expands throughout our network.

Pros

  • Small form factor
  • Strong CPU/horse power
  • Scalable deployment model

Cons

  • Not running IOS-XR, so OS is a bit dated.
  • License changes can be painful to implement.
  • Licensing can be expensive.
  • Form factor
  • CPU power
  • Expandable licensing
  • Replaced legacy gear
  • Freed up rack space with smaller form factor.
  • Future proof our network for future expansion.

The Cisco ASR 1001 Aggregation Services Router (ASR) is best suited for applications that require high CPU throughput in a small space. It's extremely lightweight and does a great job of running CPU-intensive routing protocols within our network. We are definitely not using it to its full potential, but all the features are there. Its drawback is that the small form factor gives it an extremely small port density.
