We currently using Cisco Catalyst Switches as access, distribution and core network components in our campus networks. At the moment most of them are model 3850. But from the beginning of this year we need to migrate to the SDA network and are currently implementing also 9300 and 9500 series. So we are looking for the best practices for such a migration.
Pros
- Dot1x
- Mab
Cons
- Initial setup.
- Console interface.
We are using the catalyst switches together with monitoring, config management and firmware deployment tools and it gives us the ability to save some time on deploying, operating and troubleshooting. Stacking mechanism is also very helpful and gives us great ability to plan and implement a highly scalable network. Virtualization benefits are not really necessary in campus networks.
Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series Switches provide advanced customization and our organization has benefited from these capabilities by using different network switch modules to get exactly that functionality that we need.
Manageability is also not bad but in the case of managing alone it is nothing special in comparison with another Cisco or other switches.

We are using a lot of Cisco components in our network and it was much easier to combine them with Cisco switches. Also Cisco switches were much more scalable, in terms of port number, type, redundancy, etc. And it's also much easier to find a Cisco network specialist to configure and handle switches because of the huge and active community.
