We are currently using the Cisco Catalyst 9200 switches as our access layer switch. We have plans on sometime down the road utilizing the capability of these switches to support Security Group Tags for Cisco Identity Services Engine. Although we are not currently using these switches for this purpose, this hardware is fully capable to provide both the throughput and user port density that we need at the access layer.
Pros
- Provide density of ports for access layer.
- Provides reliability so that managment of the device is minimal.
- Provides PoE Plus to support the newer Cisco AP models.
Cons
- Not a huge fan of the licensing model.
- A bit pricey for an access layer switch.
- Would like some IoT functionality built in.
- We have not had any issues with these switches thus far.
- Planning for the future with getting this new hardware in has had a positive impact on our hardware lifecycle.
My organization has not taken advantage of the DNA functionality of these switches.
The line of Nexus switches is far more suited to support the data center layer of the network model. The Nexus switches have more horsepower and can provide support for Cisco technologies such as ACI. From the perspective of reliability and performance, I would say that the Nexus line has far and beyond more reliability and performs on a much higher level. I guess sometimes you get what you pay for as the Nexus switches are significantly more expensive than Catalyst 9200's.
