Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst IE3100 Rugged Series Switches

Conveyance, process device aggregation, and MCC device connectivity.

Pros

  • Copper Ethernet device aggregation
  • Footprint is small
  • Upgrade firmware is easier than IE-2000

Cons

  • There is not a IE-3100 SFP only replacement model that the IE-2000 model
  • The 4 SFP port models of the IE-2000 were not carried forward to the IE-3100
  • The WebUI when settings are modified for columns displayed, these settings cannot be saved.
  • Troubleshooting is greatly improved except for not keeping the column format not being preserved.
  • The WebUI page has a security certificate warning which causes a security violation false positive alert.
The search did not work above. The biggest improvement Cisco could make would be to provide an accelerated boot up. This can be done by not spinning up devices not used on the switch.

SolarWinds IP Address Manager (IPAM)
There are a bunch of anomalies with DLR in release 17.12 - 17.14 so DLR topologies are not good fits. Hub and spoke topologies are great fits.

Using Cisco Catalyst IE3100 Rugged Series Switches

5 - We use the IE-3100/Stratix 5200 for demonstrations for our customers. Our customers are the End-Users, OEMs, and System Integrators. Having the ability to showcase these switches to our customers helps them see how the switch can fit their application.
5 - We have Cisco Certified individuals (CCNP and CCNA) and automation focused individuals.
  • Automation Device Aggregation.
  • High Speed Interface support for HMIs and local servers.
  • Ability to replace un-managed switches
  • The Monitoring/Interface Performance enhancements are greatly improved and helps drive the value of the IE-3100.
  • Support of multiple DLR Rings helps open a new use case for the IE-3100 high end switch
  • Once the IAD (Industrial Asset Discovery) feature works it way into the IE-3100 platform, this will allow some more applications for Industrial Asset Discovery and verification.
The new IE-3100/Stratix 5200 WEBUI platform and the new IOX-XE firmware platform is a great improvement on the switch performance in the field.

Evaluating Cisco Catalyst IE3100 Rugged Series Switches and Competitors

Yes - Unmanaged Stratix 2000 and N-Tron switches.
  • Scalability
  • Ease of Use
  • Other
The scalability, speed and reliability is helping the IE-3100 fill some areas the IE-2000 did no fill. ie, all Gig chassis. Multiple DLR Ring support.

Configuring Cisco Catalyst IE3100 Rugged Series Switches

I wish there was a virtual configuration tool that would allow the firmware and the configuration that would result in creating an image that could be written to the IE SD Card. We don't know what firmware is going to ship with the switch. If we had the ability to create the SD Card image that can be inserted in the switch and the update can be completed, this would allow the initial integration a lot more simplier.
If there was a configuration template that could be customized so the configuration could be "graded" quickly so the configuration can be verified and a test document can be produced that shows the current switch configuration/performance.
Yes - we have customized the interface extensively - It is easy to do, but the changes are not saved which is irritating.
No - we have not done any custom code
If we had the virtual configuration tool, that would be wonderful.

  • Express Setup helps initially define ports to management ports.
  • Port Bandwidth utilization tool is very nice improvement over IE-2000.
  • Multiple Port Smartport configuration for non-VLAN 1 is a big improvement.
  • CLI WEBUI Tool is nice.
  • When colums are customized on different WebUI views, these changes are not saved.
  • It would be nice if there was an MS Excel export on some of the screens, ie, Port Utilization, Port configuration.
  • The Free Space number is not updated on the "Delete unused files" on the Administration Screen does not update when the files are deleted.
  • Speed and Duplex are no-longer showed on the WebUI. This is a common problem in the industrial automation environment.

Upgrading Cisco Catalyst IE3100 Rugged Series Switches

Yes - I would be nice if there was a time estimate or a completion wheel so we know where we are in the upgrade process. Some parts of the process takes 15 - 20 minutes, but there is not indication where we are in the update.
  • New Features
  • Really looking forward to the IAD feature being pulled into the IE-3100.
  • Port Bandwidth utilization tool is great.
