Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Commvault is being used both for internal backups and as a backup solution for our on-premises customers as well. As of now, it is the only backup solution we use for on-premises customers/systems (we use Azure Backup for systems in Azure). Commvault addresses the business problem of having a scalable, dependable, and easy to use backup solution that supports multiple backup methods.

Pros and Cons

Scalable: Commvault is easy to deploy across environments and scales easy as the environment grows.
Lots of depth: Commvault operates as its own "ecosystem", which allows you to do many things with it.
Different backup options: Commvault supports various native application backups (SQL, DB2, Windows File system, Virtual Server, etc.).

Complexity: While the in-depth ecosystem of Commvault is nice for advanced users, there is a steep learning curve.
Workflows: While a lot of tasks can be automated with their workflow feature, various tasks and options are still not available.

Return on Investment

Positive: Available Solution - We are able to leverage the various backup methods and retention options to our customers, selling different solutions as different SKU's.
Positive: Backups! - The obvious positive impact is we are able to support backups on our own internal systems and also provide data protection to our customers.

Alternatives Considered

Azure Backup

When it comes to on-prem, we only use Commvault for data protection. Anything in Azure we use Azure Backup.
The main difference is there is more data protection types supported with Commvault. Although Azure Backup supports on-prem as well, you simply get much more options and a much better backup solution using Commvault for on-prem backups.

Support Rating

Commvault support is some of the best vendor support I have worked with. Their staff are very knowledgeable across all tiers, they are always available to assist, their documentation is always up to date, etc. I have not run into any issues that Commvault support has not been able to help resolve.

Commvault is a great program for MSPs. As an MSP, you are usually supporting various different environments and Commvault allows you to backup various different applications using various different methods. For instance, Virtual Backups leverage VMware snapshots and is a very scalable option. Even if not an MSP, Commvault is well suited for companies that have a various range of infrastructure that needs to be backed up.

Overall Satisfaction with Commvault
