Overall Satisfaction with Dell PowerEdge R

We run a virtualization solution on top of a pair of PowerEdge R servers.

Pros

  • Good price - Compared to other vendors’ server platforms. In our scenario (virtualization) we found out PowerEdge offers the best price/vCPU and RAM ratio.
  • Customizable - We were able to select optimal memory/disk capacity for our use case. Other platform's minimum requirements were above our needs, hence needlessly expensive.
  • Good warranty and service - Our project did not involve creating a big cluster with a lot of spare capacity, so the next business day warranty came handy.

Cons

  • Remote management - we use Linux, and the iDRAC management utilities support were better suited for Windows.
  • Cheaper than similar servers from other vendors, e.g. blade platforms.
  • Better service - Dell's business warranty is one of the best on the market.
  • Extensibility allowed us to upgrade the server instead of buying an additional one when we needed to increase capacity a bit.
The initial investment for Dell PowerEdge R is much lower.
It has the optimal price/power ratio.
Easy to install and maintain, but remote administration console could be better.

Do you think Dell PowerEdge delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Dell PowerEdge's feature set?

Yes

Did Dell PowerEdge live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Dell PowerEdge go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Dell PowerEdge again?

Yes

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Java SE, Apache Tomcat
If you are looking for a mid-size server with extensibility capacity, PowerEdge R is a good solution. Not so good for storage server maybe. In general, it is great for a small scale virtualization project.
