Overall Satisfaction with Dell PowerEdge R

We use a Dell PowerEdge R as the primary storage server in our organization, as well as a SQL server. It is used across the whole organization and maintains the integrity of all data, providing shared drives for access by approximately 1,000 users.
  • The servers are stable
  • The servers are fault tolerant
  • The servers are easily managed via IPMI
  • The servers are easily upgraded and maintained
  • I would like to see expanded use of AMD processors across the range
  • I would like to see more storage options for NVME disks
  • I would like to see improved memory compatibility
  • Low power consumption means lower running cost
  • Stability and longevity mean the machines ROI is high
  • Ease of upgradeability and maintenance are positives for ROI
  • Smaller businesses may not benefit from the cost of the machines
I have had experience with these other servers (not listed) and had a better experience with the Dell:
IBM System X
HP DL380
Huawei RH2288V2
As with all servers, if you know what you are doing you will be just fine with the Dell PowerEdge R. They are easily maintained, serviced, and upgraded. The IPMI interface is also great.
Dell support is outstanding, both first-party and via third-party partner support.

Did Dell PowerEdge R live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Dell PowerEdge R go as expected?

Would you buy Dell PowerEdge R again?

Dell PowerEdge R servers are well suited to medium to large organizations looking for robust storage or virtualization platforms. The machines are less appropriate for small businesses where the cost of the machine outweighs its usefulness.
