Overall Satisfaction with IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers

I have been involved with the below use cases in my experience - 1) Migrate on-prem servers/applications to IBM DC Cloud to new bare metal servers and build the Application (Lift and Shift the Custom Applications). 2) Build New Custom Applications from Scratch on Brand new LINUX bare metal servers.
  • Compatible for custom Applications.
  • Allows to install needed packages.
  • Self install required software like oracle, tools, compliers.
  • C compiler wasn't available by default.
  • Sendmail feature/package wasn't available by default.
  • Dependant on admins to get issues resolved.
  • Able to reduce on-prem costs for client and host Applications in IBM Cloud Datacenter.
  • New Applications are being built in IBM Cloud Datacenter.
  • Build only needed hardware to limit the costs for Client.
Application performance has been increased by using a dedicated bare metal server and building the compute and storage as per the project needs. When large files came into the Application for processing, we were able to handle the throughput in the system without a glitch.
I have seen a drastic difference between the past and present. In the past, procuring a new server on-prem used to be a 2-3 month process with paperwork and procurement approvals. At present, procuring a bare metal server and provisioning is like a same-day activity.
Configured file systems on bare metal servers and was able to increase the size whenever required. Can limit the costs initially to understand the application demand and need. Later, have the flexibility to increase the size of the file system as the application grows bigger and bigger without any hassle.
  • IBM Cloud Virtual Servers
In my whole experience, I have been using IBM products, be it servers/technology software on both on-prem and cloud. I could hardly recall any major issues or fallouts using these products. The infrastructure and support have been a backbone for all of the client applications to date providing availability and the ability to accommodate growth.

Would you buy IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers again?

Yes

IBM AIX, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), IBM MQ
Well suited - 1) To Install required Products/Software in a middleware technology 2) Customize the file system and size of the storage 3) Install required monitoring tools like Tivoli, Splunk, etc. Less appropriate - 1) Maybe for SAAS products that do not require all of the installations.
