Overall Satisfaction with IBM Cloud IaaS (formerly IBM Bluemix - IaaS)

We use IBM Cloud IaaS along with services provided by other major IaaS -- primarily those from AWS and Google. Some customers are weary of using Amazon, Google, or Microsoft for their cloud hosting and want to look for those features being offered by a different company, and for those use cases, IBM Cloud IaaS is a great option.

Pros

  • Options for dedicated servers or VMs gives us a lot of flexibility from a provisioning standpoint
  • Support is very receptive to questions and eager to help

Cons

  • Platform is not as well-integrated with other major components (load balancers, database hosting, DNS) as the other major cloud providers
  • Mainly IBM Cloud IaaS gives us another option to propose to customers who are interested in IaaS but are weary of Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Many of those customers are large enterprises who are familiar with IBM, and for that reason, it's a nice product to be able to point those customers toward.
  • AWS, Google Cloud and Azure
The main reason to choose IBM Cloud IaaS is a business case where an organization does not want to use offerings from Google, Amazon, or Microsoft, for whatever reason. Within that reasoning, IBM Cloud IaaS is a good option. From a flexibility and cost perspective, the better choice is almost always to go with one of the three major IaaS providers
Overall, IBM Cloud IaaS still has a ways to go before it's a service we can normally recommend to others. In most cases, the decision to use IBM for cloud services may be based on other contracts with IBM or a customer familiarity with their offerings. For most use cases where relying on Amazon, Google, and Microsoft is not an issue, their respective IaaS offerings are more complete from a product perspective and generally lower cost.
