Overall Satisfaction with IBM Storage FlashSystem

We utilize SVC and FlashSystem as production storage for our IBMi and VMware environments, and a standalone Flash system for the DR site. We use the SVC Enhanced Stretch cluster as an HA solution for the production site, on top of it, IBMi PowerHA, and a VMware stretched cluster. We then perform PBR for DR purposes and trigger a Safeguarded Snapshot for Cyber Resilience.

Pros

  • Performance with FlashCore Modules.
  • Cyber Resilience with safeguarded Snapshots.
  • IBMi full integration.

Cons

  • More efficient deduplication.
  • Increase Flexibility in snapshot scheduling.
  • DRAID geometry modification.
  • 3 Site replication over long distance and high latency IP networks with PBHA.
  • Easy of use is a key aspect, as we do not have dedicated storage staff.
  • Our RPO has lowered near to Zero, using PBR as replication and this is key for us.
  • DR plan testing has become easier and less time-consuming, allowing us to conduct tests more frequently.
Safeguarded Snapshots and PBR. Since we adopted PBR we have seen a massive reduction of our asynchronous replication delays. We can easily be compliant with our expected RPO, and basically we are almost everytime at RPO=0, without changing anything in the infrastructure . We love as well the huge performance and high compression rates delivered by FlashCore Modules, that allow us to save money while keeping our applications performing as desired.
We have been using FlashSystem for many years, so we have seen a constant increase in features and performance all over the years. Now, with PBR and Snapshots, we have achieved lower RPO and better security. Snapshot, are now easier to use, thanks to the new integrated policies, allowing for internal setup of scheduling and retention.

Do you think IBM Storage FlashSystem delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with IBM Storage FlashSystem's feature set?

Yes

Did IBM Storage FlashSystem live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of IBM Storage FlashSystem go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy IBM Storage FlashSystem again?

Yes

Top choice for IBMi integration. In general, it's a very good solution for quite a lot of customers. If you need a 3 site replication solution (HA + DR) maybe it's not the best solution, unless you use SVC.
FlashCore Modules have very powerful compression rate, while mantaining good performance: high IOPS rate and really low latency.

Evaluating IBM Storage FlashSystem and Competitors

  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
FlashSystem has for sure the best integration with IBMi servers, but is well integrated witch VMware world as well. We know FlashSystem very well: we have been using them since many years, so we are skilled on these systems. They are consistent in performane, reliable and easy to use: I think there is no reason to change.
Probably we could evaluate different systems if they had the same level of integration with IBM Power Systems servers and IBMi OS. But, as far as we know there is no other oprtion in the storage market that offers suche a complete compatibility with those systems. So I don't think we'll go anywehere else
