Overall Satisfaction with Linode
I used to build and run all of my company's GNU/Linux servers and found that Linode presented a better option. A virtual server allows me to not worry about maintaining the server, there are automatic rotating backups, and I don't need to go through the process every so often of upgrading the box. Linodes just freely upgrade every couple years. Their network backbone is also very solid, and the only time I ever had trouble with it was when my web server was hit by a DDOS attack, and the Linode people handled it automatically for me. Highly recommended.
- High speed internet.
- Reliability.
- Handle hardware for you.
- The price is higher than some of the alternatives.
- I would like ARM-based servers.
- They only allow one snapshot backup at a time, which makes upgrading difficult.
- It has replaced the occasional server purchases, upgrades and repairs into a regular monthly and predictable cost, that probably averages out to less than what we were paying before.
- Having automated rotating backups prevents a catastrophic loss of data that could happen if I maintained my own box that got fried.
They have smoothed out occasional large purchases of servers and equipment into one predictable price that delivers roughly comparable total cost of ownership. Some things are kind of oddly priced, but overall it is about the same or even less money than we were paying before for servers.
Linode basically never goes down. We got DDOSed one time and that made my web site inaccessible briefly, but Linode's netops people handled it remarkably well, and I've never had any other issues with reliability.
