Overall Satisfaction with Linode

I'm using Linode to provide small compute enclaves that do localized processing that passes content to other websites. Or, put another way, it's the secret brain that runs our sites. I tend to use it exclusively, though I have users that utilize the node on it, and the service it provides is utilized by all kinds of systems. It's where I do R&D as well as production services.
  • Fantastic Console Access -- everything is clear and well laid out.
  • Support -- their support has been absolutely stellar, both in quality and responsiveness.
  • Surprise Upgrades -- their rewarding of customers by boosting space or CPU power while keeping the cost steady has been phenomenal.
  • My greatest fear is that Linode will expand to a broader reach of services diluting what they are enormously talented at; they currently provide a very nice cost/service ratio that is virtually unbeatable. I don't need or want every cloud bell and whistle, what I want is to be able to stand up and have raw console access to a Linux system I can completely customize.
  • I wish Linode offered cheap, large storage options -- I don't need speed, I need space, lots of it. I could totally tolerate spinning rust as an option if it dropped more storage on me. I have several external multi-terrabyte drives picked up at Costco connected locally and bridge these, since I can't afford to do it in the cloud due to recurring costs.
  • Linode can be spun up so fast it is easy to jump right in.
  • Linode gives true console access, which AWS does not! That means things like single user mode and disk repairs (if even necessary) are actually possible. You can treat your machine like a pet, not cattle, if you want.
  • Linode has a fantastic mechanism for creating snapshots easily and affordably, and without shutting down the system; it's nice to know that safety net (and it works, btw) is there.
In short, where most people seem to be looking for how to build the biggest, bad-a$$ system of cloud services, I'm working on the opposite -- making small, fast, hyper-efficient solutions with minimal cost and maximal power. Linode embraces the ability to do this.
It's like they're sitting there waiting there for me.
By not having to buy a lot of services or use metered systems, I can operate at an affordable fixed-cost basis.
We're designed in such a way that we can take a lot of failures and outages, so if we're down for a few hours (or days), it's okay. That said, Linode has never been a problem.
I have recommended Linode over and over to people. I'd love to be part of an affiliate program.
