Liquibase Business

Overall Satisfaction with Liquibase

We use Liquibase to mandarin our ever-growing database. As a startup, we are constantly editing the data and the table structure, so it’s crucial we have reliable software helping us out. It solved the main issue we were having, which was database version control. It is much more convenient to update tables, etc. with such streamlined software.

Pros

  • Database versioning

  • Failsafe and easy-to-understand solutions to most common problems in database usage

Cons

  • Initial user installation and onboarding could be improved.
  • There could be better and more software updates.
  • Error output handling could be better. In my opinion, sometimes, it’s a bit too cryptic.
  • No database mishaps. It happened before when we were doing all the database management manually and we dropped one too many columns, and you really don’t want to do it by yourself. Liquibase has helped us mitigate that.
  • We have experienced zero downtime apart from the planned maintenance windows. The updates happen quickly and we have reduced the amount of time we leave the software offline.
  • By being so quick, we have reduced the deployment time by a considerable margin. We know we can trust the software to do all the heavy lifting for us.
We bought the software because we did not have one. It has been great so far and it does most of the heavy lifting. It’s been great for what we have used it for and it has been very consistent overall.
Great customer service. We spotted a few bugs and they were addressed in a few releases. They were also able to provide alternatives and solutions to our problems. A great and positive experience.
At the time, Liquibase offered a community version and I think Flyway didn’t. In our case, we did not have any previous experience with any database management tools, so we just went with what was free to try out.

After the initial hurdle of understanding how the software works, it’s a great tool to have in your organization. It is set and forget for the most part and it integrates well with the most common deployment pipelines. I use it with Jenkins and it helped us a lot to develop a pipeline that we can trust and know that it will deliver.
