Use Cases and Deployment Scope

MS Sharepoint, utilizing SQL as the back end, is used by our organization as a single point for document storage and versioning. It also is used to host workflows and forms. We also use it extensively for hosting internal IT documentation.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Document versioning - provides an easy way to view the history of a document and allow for collaboration
Customization - easy to build custom pages to accomplish what you need
Integration - works well with the rest of MS Office

Cons

Search is not up to modern standards
Database storage of all documents as BLOBs makes the databases overly large
Settings required make a dedicated SQL instance required

Likelihood to Recommend

SharePoint works well in a full Microsoft environment that needs a central repository for primarily documents. It allows for much better document management than a file share. However, it has a relatively high cost, and is probably not needed in smaller environments.
