Overall Satisfaction with NetApp SnapMirror

We use SnapMirror to replicate all production content to DR sites. It is a critical component of our disaster recovery plan.

Pros

  • Seeding is only required initially
  • Replication updates are very swift
  • Traffic can be reduced with network compression
  • It is well integrated with NetApp's SnapCenter backup tool

Cons

  • GUI interface lacks several options, requiring command line setup
  • Command line steps for removing a replication job can be tricky
  • Cost savings would come in the event of a disaster, speeding up recovery significantly
  • The amount of storage needed to purchase for backups is significantly smaller due to NetApp's excellent compression and deduplication ratios
It just works 99% of the time. Even if there's a network outage, jobs just pick up after the outage is over. The only reason it's not a 10 is the weakness of the GUI interface for configuration. For me, all configuration has to be done at the command line.
NetApp SnapCenter integrates very well with SnapMirror. A single SnapCenter job creates local backups and then kicks off pre-created SnapMirror jobs immediately thereafter.

Veeam has a great product for use when content is not on NetApp storage. It has a lot of similar strengths, although it has the same weaknesses as any traditional-style backup as well.

It is fantastic for disaster recovery. We've used it in DR tests for years and it just works. This is the primary reason I can think of why a company would use this feature set.
