Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In the midst of running applications in a more cloud native environment, we wanted to increase our use of containers. The challenge of upskilling our team and also migrating applications presented this as a challenge. We found Portainer to provide a good mix of easy to use interface while still providing a powerful enough environment to running the applications in a configuration we needed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Stacks, and associated versioning (think of this a Docker Compose on easy mode)
Managing container images (quickly highlights images not in use)
HA capabilities

Cons

I would like to see the ability to create a draft stack while working to solidify an containers working environment. Today, if I'm called to a different task while working on a stack config, I need to save that "draft" off line and then go back to it when I have the time (lots of copy and paste when I don't think it's needed)
While performance stats are provided per container, I would like to see a roll-up of the stats per worker node. This would help get a more holistic view of the environments performance.

Return on Investment

Portainer has reduced the time to deploy containers which means more services available sooner.
Portainer has also been an amazingly easy tool to adopt for users who need re-skilling/up-skilling
Portainer has allowed us to focus on the outcome more so than the dirty details of a deployment. This is also true for the operations envorment.

Usability

The usability is one of the strongest feature sets of the product. Again, has allowed us to up-skill/re-skill with minimal training or downtime.

Likelihood to Recommend

The UI is very easy and spinning up a container doesn't take much knowhow. It's easy to use to re-skill techs who have experience with say a VM environment and are just getting into containers.

I also like the mutli-node management environment that is provided. It provides a single pain of glass for managing multiple worker nodes which makes operations much easier.
