Portainer overall is pretty solid
Overall Satisfaction with Portainer
I use Portainer for two things. For my home server to run accessible bulk storage and media, along with smart home functionalities. For my technical projects, I can just spin up a stack based off a GitHub repo, currently running over 50 technical projects through my Portainer instance - it makes the whole process 10x easier to setup, run and maintain.
Pros
- Makes spinning up an accessible container very easy
- Making changes to a container instance straightforward
- Great logging!
Cons
- Some of the documentation is lacking scope or missing sections that were previously covered in past versions documentation
- With large project volumes - for instance 120 instances for a single project to fully run, the dashboards feel a little useless
- It’s saved a lot of time and effort on the deployment servers, the setup was basically seamless once we got the first instance up and running
Azure and AWS have their own issues, especially around complexity just to setup one thing that Portainer can do in 10 seconds. Octopus Deploy has excellent logs, analytics and dashboard views - but the configuration is more of a hassle than Portainer. Overall for the projects fit, Portainer made sense - especially as it can all get run on prem
