Overall Satisfaction with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

We use virtualized servers on VMWare for critical applications like SAP. We have multiple layers like dev, QA, staging and production systems, and lab instances.

Pros

  • Security
  • Reliability
  • Scaling

Cons

  • Availability of more packages from the Linux community, possibly through the EPEL (but I understand why many of them are not there.)
  • We were a HP-UX shop before going to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in 2012, and we saved a lot of money in OS licensing fees and hardware costs since then.
I'm a long time Linux user and sysadmin (1996), and worked with many distributions from the Debian world, and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) way of controlling how things get done is more enterprise friendly to me, and leads to a cleaner install, and better overall automation. The general OS is well integrated with the kernel.

Do you think Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)'s feature set?

Yes

Did Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) again?

Yes

I think it is well suited for most modern large business applications. Of course, most of the companies now run Microsoft Active Directory and this can't be run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) as far as I can tell. It could run MS SQL though, but for some reason I think there is resistance in the enterprise to replace Windows servers by Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to do this. Maybe that's something that Red Hat could push more.
