Overall Satisfaction with StarWind Virtual SAN
As an IT consulting company, we needed to find a replacement for the HP StoreVirtual VSA product for 2-node hyper-converged solutions. After demos and deployments of several products like HPE's StorMagic (which is their direct replacement product) and other 3rd party vSAN software like Open-E, one of our engineers deployed Starwind Virtual SAN at a client. He immediately reached out to me and several other engineers about the fantastic function and support of the product, and that StarWind Virtual SAN should be our go-to for future deployments. After seeing the product and experiencing the top-notch support we agreed that this will be the product of our solution to HP StoreVirtual moving forward.
- Fantastic support before, during, and after deployments
- Ease of deployment
- Hardware agnostic
- More deployments with web UI management consoles instead of the downloaded programs.
- Standardized pricing according to the storage volume deployed.
- There really isn't anything else, it's a great product!
- Major positive cost savings over purchasing physical SANs
- Positive impact allowing very fast storage results
- Positive cost savings over having to purchase 10gbe or faster switches to handle the synchronizations
We are able to deploy this software on any brand of hardware from SuperMicro to HP to Dell. StarWind Virtual SAN also sells packages where they spec the hardware, build the servers, and deploy the hypervisor for you. When you receive the product all you have to do is turn it on and follow the instructions that a live support person over the phone will direct you through. We have had great results deploying this product on both HyperV and VMware.
We have not deployed the web-based application for management. This is due to the support personnel directing us to the download of an installed program to manage the SAN. I would rather have web-based management than an installed program. I would expect the support personnel to direct us towards this approach especially if it is seen as best practice. This was the only downside - which is not a downside of the product but only due to the support person we were dealing with. However, the support person was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the product.
The combination of overall cost and quality of support makes StarWind Virtual SAN stand out as our product of choice. We have not come across any other product that is inexpensive enough to be affordable for SMB, enough support that makes you feel supremely confident of the deployment, and performance that rivals everything else.
