[...] initial StarWind Virtual SAN Review
Overall Satisfaction with StarWind Virtual SAN
2 node StarWind Virtual SAN cluster for evaluation in production environment. HDD and NVME storage targets for VMware 8 3 node cluster. Leveraging existing hardware and network for comparison against existing VMWare VSAN solution. Recommend using a 2.5G network switching device (or better) to improve response times for network storage.
Pros
- Ease of implementation on existing Intel hardware.
- Implement tiered storage design
- Integration with VMware vCenter
- StarWind Backup server integration use
Cons
- Integration with other virtualization platforms (not all tested)
- External monitoring solutions integrations
- Integrated workflow for provisioning storage
- Positive ROI for specific solution designs
- Large scale designs a little harder to manage and/or justify at this time
- Geographical replication/failover design
Simple but lower functionality/capacity, offset costs comparison. Maintenance costs and support variables decrease ROI for other solutions reviewed.
