Overall Satisfaction with Ubiquiti Wireless WAN
With fifty locations and a variety of equipment in place we decided to standardize on a single platform for switches, wireless access points, firewalls, and security cameras. At our headquarters we have Cisco Meraki, however the annual cost of fifty sites was daunting. We looked at several other vendors, trialed many of them, and selected Ubiquiti as our final vendor - it offers all of the features needed (cloud management being first and foremost), many of the "plus" features we desired, the cost was lower than the competition in terms of actual upfront pricing, and there is no ongoing service / management fee. The cost difference was substantial enough that we are able to migrate five sites for the cost we had budgeted for three. At each site our users have been delighted.
Pros
- Range of coverage - The devices have great range, exceeding other vendors we trialed.
- Quality of product - The APs are solidly built, durable, reliable, and they also have aesthetic options ("skins", aka covers) that help us blend the APs into the sites and make them unobtrusive.
- Extensive features - The devices have all of the features of Meraki APs, Aerohive APs, etc.
- Deep manageability - Once connected to a cloudkey, these devices are easy to manage at all levels, across all locations. From hardware to software, we never need to go onsite to manage the devices.
Cons
- Setup - These are fairly easy to set up alone, but integrating into an enterprise network takes effort and some IT saavy. It's not something I would trust to an end-user.
- The solution costs 3/5ths of our estimated budget
