Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365
Currently, Veeam Backup for Office 365 is being used across our entire organization. The foremost problem being addressed by the Veeam solution is that of backup. Microsoft generally does a good job of keeping data safe, however malicious deletion by an authorized user is the responsibility of the tenant. To mitigate the risk of a departing employee from deleting critical data either purposefully or accidentally, we know we have a series of snapshots to protect the data.
- Snapshots of Exchange online accounts.
- Backups of SharePoint sites.
- Backups of OneDrive data.
- Ability to separate back up jobs into smaller user groups without having to start over.
- Ability to search across multiple backup jobs.
- Veeam products are an integral part of our data protection policies.
First, when we had on-prem Exchange servers, our policy was to take a snapshot the morning before an employee was terminated or immediately if the termination was unforeseen. This saved us from the loss of data in the case of the purposeful or accidental deletion of email.
When email was moved to the cloud, we sought a comparable solution. Veeam.
Second, as we grew our usage of SharePoint, we had to have a backup in case of an error on the part of Microsoft or one of our in-house administrators. There was too much work invested not to be able to get back to a known good configuration. Again - Veeam.

We have had executives depart and attempt to delete all of their email records. That presented zero issues, as we simply restored from our Veeam backup after their access has been removed. This can be particularly helpful when the departing employee is in Finance or Sales, where email chains can last months and be worth millions.
In the case of terminated senior-level executives like the CFO, we have exported as a PST for long-term storage in an optical disk. We have also restored to a separate location for investigative purposes in the case of reported abuse.
Recently we had a customer attempt to claim that a former sales manager had made promises that we could find no record of. That again saved several thousands of dollars.

The best part is the "set it and forget it" configuration. We have a very small IT department for the number of users we support. We do not have a person dedicated to backup and another dedicated to security and yet another dedicated to storage. We have 2 people that manage all of that. Veeam doesn't have to be 'managed,' it just works.
I stuck with Veeam as we had an existing relationship after using their on-prem products for years. I had looked at a few other solutions but they had "bolted on" Office 365 support to an existing product. Such afterthought features rarely work well without taking a lot of time to "tune" them.
