Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
After virtualizing our servers we needed a new way to backup more efficiently. Veeam allows us to easily backup all of our data to multiple locations so that we can be secure our data will not be lost. This includes the ability to reach into old backups for single files without the need to restore the full VM.
Pros
- Veeam really simplifies backing up VMs. Just point it at your hosts and where you want the data stored and you are all set.
- It is also good at easily setting up multiple locations for backups and triggering other backups any time the main backup set is run.
Cons
- Occasionally Veeam has trouble authenticating against a backup location. This has not been an issue in the last year or so, so recent updates may have fixed this.
- The interface can be a little intimidating to someone without an IT background.
- The simplification of single file recovery has been a huge time saver.
We currently have about 9 VMs that are covered by Veeam. Originally we had only 4, but we have fully virtualized our servers at this point.
We have not had to restore full VMs outside of testing luckily, but the ability to point to cheap commodity storage products can be a big cost saver.
We tried a few products alongside Veeam and chose it due to cost, not needing to buy vendor specific hardware, and ease of use.
