Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam Backup and Replication as a proxy to backup VMWare virtual machines to a couple of backup repositories.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Veeam stands out among backup solutions because of its ability to work with almost any storage type. For example, only a small portion of backup solutions will support catalyst stores, Veeam does.
  • Veeam is extremely flexible when it comes to setting it up. I had a network recently that limited ethernet connectivity between the Veeam VM and the backup repository and Veeam handled it easily.
  • Day-to-day use of Veeam is very simple. It is easy to train our technicians to use it proficiently in a very short amount of time.
  • Our Veeam VMs don't have issues very often, but the one or two times I have called for support, they answered right away, and the technicians assisting us were knowledgeable about their products.
  • I would like to see a setting to limit the bandwidth to a maximum amount for backups.

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

I can only speak for the 50 or so servers that we manage. We started with 13 servers and have scaled up from there. Licensing has easily scaled with the growth of our program.
  • The benefits are the same as any other backup solution. The main differences that I see are: 1) Veeam works in almost any scenario. If your requirements change, Veeam will most likely still support your environment. 2) Management of Veeam is very easy to learn. Training your technicians takes very little time, saving you money for the day-to-day labor of managing it. Labor costs are always our biggest expense.
We first changed to Veeam due to a change in our network topology that made our previous solution inoperable. We tried five or six solutions in the lab and Veeam really stood out. Only two of the final solutions had the capability to support our network. Between the two solutions, Veeam was a better product.
We have our own private cloud that we run our environments on. We do not use public cloud for the programs that I work with. In our current setup, Veeam coordinates the backups over ethernet and the backups are done over fiber channels to the repositories. This keeps the backups off of the ethernet network, freeing up bandwidth for management traffic.
We used it while engineering the network initially. During the early stages of developing the network, it was very helpful. Our company requires us to use different solutions for data management for normal operations.
Every scenario I have encountered so far has been appropriate for Veeam. We have three solutions we choose between and even in situations where the others don't work, Veeam has had no issues providing a backup solution.
