Vertex Cloud Indirect Tax

Overall Satisfaction with Vertex

Our Company is currently in the process of integrating Workday Cloud ERP with Vertex Cloud and moving to Vertex Returns Cloud. We currently use Vertex 7 On Premise - Consumer's Use. Our goal is to automate the verification of supplier sales tax and automate the ledger entries to self-assess use tax. We would also like to bring in the outsourced returns process to Vertex Cloud Returns.

Cons

  • Support for Vertex Cloud is lacking.
  • The sales process around determining if on-demand vs. cloud would fit a client's needs.
  • Vertex Returns provided with the cloud lacks functionality when compared to the returns module used with on-premise or on-demand.
  • The Vertex Cloud front end was very simple to stand up. Our tax department along with our implementation partner, had the configurations done in a few week's time.
  • Knowing now that the Cloud returns does not have full functionality and EDI capability, we would not have made the decision to purchase Cloud for the calculation engine and may have gone with on-demand.

In my opinion, the most important factor in the Company's decision to go with Vertex Cloud was to implement a true cloud to cloud, end to end system between our new ERP and Vertex, and eliminate the technology-related costs associated with an on-premise solution. We are a company that has adopted the agile development methodology on our own platforms, which also aligns with the Vertex upgrade and 'sprint' methodology.

Vertex is a trusted partner and is a key player in the consumer's use tax space. The other products we reviewed did not meet our specific needs as they were geared towards the retail space.
  • We are using a data analytics tool to automate the reconciliation between ledger and cloud transactions. With a designed analytics workflow, we can automate this process in seconds each month, with the ability to research only the outliers. The Cloud standard detail export report can be used for this process.
  • We hope to get the benefit of the returns module and bring the existing outsourced returns preparation back in the house, and eliminate the professional service fees.
The Vertex Cloud product customization is somewhat limited but also expected with a newer cloud product. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Vertex Cloud as more customers switch from on-premise or on-demand to the Cloud product. I should note that Vertex is very willing to work with customers to ensure a solution is available for missing functionality, i.e. tax assist rules.
  • We are currently integrating Workday Cloud supplier invoice verification of sales tax and self-assessed tax with Vertex Cloud (consumer's use).
Vertex Cloud is more cost-effective and better for internal IT departments looking to decrease their efforts and time around the maintenance of an on-premise solution. If you are looking for an end to end solution, may not meet all of your requirements, if you are already using on-premise or on-demand.
