Overall Satisfaction with XenServer

We use XenServer as the hostserver for our Citrix VM's. We use XenServer instead of VMware for these machines because XenServer allows us to use GPU's without extra licensing costs. Other than that it also makes sure all of the Citrix resource load is on our Xen farm instead of VMware farm.

Pros

  • Free use of GPU's
  • Integrates well with the other Citrix products

Cons

  • Logging of tasks and events
  • Performance overview history
  • Positive: It is cost effective, no extra costs for GPU and probably free to use with the Citrix licenses you already have
  • Negative: It is harder te troubleshoot, so it can take more time
XenServer is a good product in its use and probably free if you have the right Citrix licenses already. However, it does require specific knowledge to manage, which makes it harder to manage if you don't have that knowledge in house.
VMware requires an Enterprise Plus license to use GPU's, which is more expensive.

Do you think XenServer delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with XenServer's feature set?

Yes

Did XenServer live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of XenServer go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy XenServer again?

Yes

I would definitely recommend using XenServer if we want or need to use GPU's for your Citrix farm but don't want to buy a Enterprise Plus license for your VMware environment. It also integrates very well with the rest of the Citrix products if you are using those. It also has less CVE's than vmware.
