Overall Satisfaction with Zscaler Private Access

We use it for both users on site and off site as a way to reach the internal applications of our environment. The tool provides some microsegmentation and also grants us insight into what and when users are connecting to applications. It also provides a consistent user experience that is based upon user roles rather than that of IP.

Pros

  • Microsegmentation
  • Scalability
  • Simplicity

Cons

  • Would prefer to do L7 filtering instead of L4
  • Would love to have a global find (how does this App Segment tie in everywhere)
  • Sometimes error messages don't really provide much information
  • PCAPs are the second step when traditionally that was the ace in the hole.
  • It allows for allowing entire groups access to applications, allowing for consistent experiences between the teams.
  • Create a level of Microsegmentation organically in our environment where the only Microsegmentation done was at the network level. This goes to the user level to allow two users on the same network to have different levels of access
  • With onboarding - the growing pains of new applications makes onboarding new things to the environment slightly painful and a task that traditionally didn't require much network involvement very network dependent.
As a whole, it provides a microsegmentation based on the user activity and allows for a consistent and secure experience for end users. For engineers who are often in step with the other teams, this is a strength that will allow them to walk alongside one another as a team and keep the network and security teams in the loop of what's going on in their environment. However it also sometimes comes with the lack of knowledge of what's going on in the environment. It's not an uncommon line to say "Zscaler Magic" or "it just works" but when it doesn't just work then it's a laborious task unraveling what is broke at times.
All of these tools are for different needs. Zscaler Private Access being for internal seems very simple as it really only allows filtering up to L4 whereas ZIA allows for filtering up to L7. ZDX often tries to give insight into the environment but since it only works with preconfigured items, that then means when a new problem shows up - ZDX isn't helpful troubleshooting postmortem. For the internal side of the house - Zscaler Private Access' strength is its simplicity to configure.

Do you think Zscaler Private Access delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Zscaler Private Access's feature set?

Yes

Did Zscaler Private Access live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Zscaler Private Access go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Zscaler Private Access again?

Yes

Zscaler Private Access works really well in environments setup for FQDNs and where you know what users should/shouldn't be accessing on what ports. You can use Zscaler Private Access to figure out these kinds of features but that doesn't always mean you'll be correct. It also provides a consistent experience for users as they can access their materials anywhere. It also makes the user the last line of defense. If a user's account is compromised then the attacker has access to everything they already did. It doesn't work great in OT environments or Server based environments. Flows have to be initiated from the client and not the server for stuff to behave properly.
