Amazon SimpleDB

Well suited for: Games, Chat rooms, real time software like corporate events, marathons and so. Anytime and anywhere you could use a NoSQL DB you should think of SimpleDB.
As an arduous AWS user, Amazon SimpleDB easily integrates with EC2 and other AWS module; and if you are not an AWS user, you also have a fantastic tool that will solve the problem for which you are focused.

IBM Cloudant

Cloudant is perfect when you have to manage fixed documents, but with different content and an articulated data hierarchy. Furthermore it maintains many document structures in one instance of the DB. Cloudant should be used when the document has a "lazy" life cycle (better if it is only based on its workflow status information) and it is not comparable to an OLTP system where the data is constantly being updated.

cloudant adds some features to improve security and data query like tokens and cloudant query that really adds a lot of power to these features over the standard CouchDB. also you can integrate your data into a relational schema using ibm dashdb for data analysis. everything is in the right place

  • Test the architecture on CouchDB helped us to address initial design flaws.
  • The migration to Cloudant as such was very painless.
  • We are now migrating our replication system to Cloudant Sync.

Alternatives Considered

It integrates beautifully with AWS. In some projects we use SimpleDB while we use DynamoDB for others, according to the characteristics of the project. If the infrastructure is AWS, we always think of one of them.

Cloudant is a hosted solution so it works better for me. Also, it includes a better authentication layer than CouchDB. As for Couchbase, it has membase but the hosted options are much more expensive. In the SQL world, I tried several sync solutions but the configuration and flow is not as smooth as the built-in capability in Cloudant.

Because of the offline-first architecture, most of the transactions are handled on the client, requiring less power on the server. Also, because it's plain http, the overload on the client is almost nothing. Cost and performance is in balance using Cloudant as a backend compared with other hosted solutions.

Return on Investment

  • Reduced database administration time
  • Reduced data model analysis time
  • Lower cost of resources in projects in general

  • Cloudant allowed us to implement a project faster due to it being fully managed and basically a plug-and-play type data store.
  • Being fully managed meant that we spent a fair bit of time on the phone yelling at IBM Support because they didn't know jack about how to solve the issues we ran into/
  • Overall Cloudant worked for us because the project timeline and budget allowed for more money to be spent on services rather than hardware (OpEx vs CapEx).
