AWS CodePipeline

I think AWS CodePipeline is a great tool for anyone wanted automated deployments in a multi-server/container AWS environment. AWS also offers services like Elastic Beanstalk that provide a more managed hosting & deployment experience. CodePipeline is a good middle ground with solid, built-in automation with enough customizability to not lock people into one deployment or architecture philosophy.

AWS OpsWorks

OpsWorks facilitates the management, monitoring and maintenance of the complete stack of Chef's infrastructure, to be part of AWS has a large community for support and assistance, it also concentrates a lot of documentation that can empower our devops area to shorten the curve Learning. Good tool to automate tasks for the company's devops and IT staff.

AWS OpsWorks

  • The interface is quite intuitive and allows you to discover and easily find what you want to do and what other features are within OpsWorks.
  • Chef integration is pretty seamless and there are a good set of options and operating systems to choose from
  • It makes things like auto scaling set up, either via load or time, more straight forward and intuitive than what you'd typically see via the EC2 console

AWS OpsWorks

  • Getting up and running with OpsWorks is a very technical and potentially time-consuming process. You need to know the ins and outs of Chef/Puppet if you really want to get into it and there isn't a convenient way to test out the environment locally so debugging can be time-consuming.
  • To take advantage of some of the newer AWS instance types you need to be running on a VPC, which again is a pain if you don't have a DevOps team.
  • The error logs and monitoring metrics in OpsWorks are pretty basic and haven't changed much over the years.

AWS CodePipeline is very useable because of its Infrastructure as Code (IaC) capabilities. Since changes to the pipelines can be version controlled, minor changes in the pipelines can be pin-pointed to causing specific issues and fix or rolled back easily as needed. More CI/CD solutions need to completely support IaC. However, Github support is weak within the product.

AWS CodePipeline only speeds the delivery of code, it does not slow down any other used software and integrates perfectly with other tools. Although it is a web-based tool, it has great performance and compatibility. Besides that, it is greatly enhanced by the other tools of AWS. It is not only limited to AWS tools but can be used with other tools such as GitHub, Jenkins, etc.

We didn't need a lot of support with AWS CodePipeline as it was pretty straightforward to configure and use, but where we ran into problems, the AWS community was able to help. AWS support agents were also helpful in resolving some of the minor issues we encountered, which we could not find a solution elsewhere.

Unless you pay for a pricey support package getting support on OpsWorks will be pretty slow. Documentation is also relatively limited and sometimes hard to follow when compared to competitors. Generally, we've been able to get the answers we need from OpsWorks support when we run into problems but don't expect rapid responses.

Alternatives Considered

AWS CodePipeline

CodeCommit and CodeDeploy can be used with CodePipeline so it’s not really fair to stack them against each other as they can be quite the compliment. The same goes for Beanstalk, which is often used as a deployment target in relation to CodePipeline.

CodePipeline fulfills the CI/CD duty, where the other services do not focus on that specific function. They are supplements, not replacements. CodePipeline will detect the updated code and handle deploying it to the actual instance via Beanstalk.

Jenkins is open source and not a native AWS service, that is its primary differentiator. Jenkins can also be used as a supplement to CodePipeline.

AWS OpsWorks

OpsWorks is an orchestration tool, basically you use it to specify the state you want your network to be in by specifying the state you want each resource (server instances, applications, storage) in which you want that resource to be. And specify the state in which you want each resource.The evaluated competitors have other benefits that in our case did not provide as many benefits as OpsWorks.

Return on Investment

AWS CodePipeline

  • CodePipeline has reduced ongoing devops costs for my clients, especially around deployment & testing.
  • CodePipeline has sped up development workflow by making the deployment process automated off git pushes. Deployment takes very little coordination as the system will just trigger based on what is the latest commit in a branch.
  • CodePipeline offered a lot of out-of-the-box functionality that was much simpler to setup than a dedicated CI server. It allowed the deployment process to built and put into production with much less and effort and cost compared to rolling the functionality manually.

AWS OpsWorks

  • OpsWorks has allowed some of our more simple application stacks to be implemented quickly and effectively. Whilst it is difficult to put actual numbers on it, it meant we could hit the ground running before tackling the more complex world of Cloudformation/Terraform to manage parts of our infrastructure.
