Amazon AWS

One of AWS Glue's most notable features that aid in the creation and transformation of data is its data catalog. Support, scheduling, and the automation of the data schema recognition make it superior to its competitors aside from that. It also integrates perfectly with other AWS tools. The main restriction may be integrated with systems outside of the AWS environment. It functions flawlessly with the current AWS services but not with other goods. Another potential restriction that comes to mind is that glue operates on a spark, which means the engineer needs to be conversant in the language.

Pros

Amazon AWS

  • It is extremely fast, easy, and self-intuitive. Though it is a suite of services, it requires pretty less time to get control over it.
  • As it is a managed service, one need not take care of a lot of underlying details. The identification of data schema, code generation, customization, and orchestration of the different job components allows the developers to focus on the core business problem without worrying about infrastructure issues.
  • It is a pay-as-you-go service. So, there is no need to provide any capacity in advance. So, it makes scheduling much easier.

  • Through this tool, I am capable of integrating, analyzing, and the entire data in a precise form and with analytics as well, due to which I always have a transparent idea about the data extraction and its transfer from multiple clouds.

Cons

Amazon AWS

  • In-Stream schema registries feature people can not use this more efficiently
  • in Connections feature they can add more connectors as well
  • The crucial problem with AWS Glue is that it only works with AWS.

Snowflake Computing

  • Snowflake UI can be clunky and breaks sometimes, which can be annoying
  • Snowflake has to be paired with the Data Build Tool (DBT) to allow for templating and macro usage. No inbuilt solution.
  • Snowflake Python connector development doesn't necessarily track popular packages such as Pandas as quickly as Pandas releases
  • Could do with better machine learning capability over warehouse tables, but I assume this is coming soon

SnowFlake is very cost effective and we also like the fact we can stop, start and spin up additional processing engines as we need to. We also like the fact that it's easy to connect our SQL IDEs to Snowflake and write our queries in the environment that we are used to

The interface is similar to other SQL query systems I've used and is fairly easy to use. My only complaint is the syntax issues. Another thing is that the error messages are not always the easiest thing to understand, especially when you incorporate temp tables. Some of that is to be expected with any new database.

    Support Rating

    Amazon AWS

Amazon responds in good time once the ticket has been generated but needs to generate tickets frequent because very few sample codes are available, and it's not cover all the scenarios.

Overall, the support from Snowflake has been very good. Since we are one of the major users for Snowflake and have a dedicated tech team to solve all the technical problem on our way. On the side of the technical problem, any sql related questions can be found from everywhere online.

    Alternatives Considered

    Amazon AWS

AWS Glue is a managed service. It was easier for us to integrate it into our stack since we are already an AWS shop. It saved us the headache of managing a 3rd part service.

In my experience running the data management practice at InterWorks, we believe that cloud data warehouse products will eventually serve the majority of data warehousing use cases and power data analytics at most companies. Of this cohort, we believe that Snowflake is the best among them for most customers. It's easier to manage, in many cases faster, and in almost all cases it is less expensive because of the ability to automatically resume and suspend depending on usage.

    Snowflake Computing

    • Faster data retrieval makes real time analysis possible.
    • Option to create multiple warehouses enable us to track usages and cost by departments.
    • Option to scale up/down computational warehouse to support peak hours and month end loads makes Snowflake cost effective.
    • Zero-copy cloning reduces storage and deployment cost.
    • Multiple users can access the same amount of data without deadlocks which is a common scenario in relational databases.
