Azure CDN

If you are looking for a secure, easy to manage, solution to store and distribute your content around the US and/or world, the Azure CDN may be the right solution. The only thing I would caution users on is that once your content is published and distributed it cannot be easily refreshed on the endpoints. Instead, you are at the mercy of the default time to live when the content was first uploaded.

Google Cloud CDN

Google Cloud CDN is available globally and supports various load balancers available in different regions around the globe, so I find Google Cloud CDN as one of the best choices for CDN as it serves globally and it is really fast, safe, and secure. It might be not suitable for you if you do not have any technical background.

Pros

Azure CDN

  • New websites can be boosted up quickly
  • Easily scalable according to our performance requirements
  • Easy integration with other Azure services
  • You only pay for what you need

Google Cloud CDN

  • The intelligent categorization and management of site content cache in Google Cloud CDN is unique and offers the best results with simple settings.
  • It has powerful servers in all geographical regions of the world and the speed of the site will increase many times for the customer with smart routing.
  • It has AnyCast IP feature and website receives a single global IP address. In this case, the site loads at the same speed worldwide.

Cons

Azure CDN

  • For the longest time they didn't have a robust SDK. They have one now, but it could be better.
  • The different flavors of Azure CDN (Akamai, Verizon, etc) have different costs, but not well differentiated features. Might be confusing to new users.
  • I'm not overly familiar with it, but AWS does have a programmability in their CDN offering (Lambda @ Edge) and Azure doesn't seem to have an equivalent (Azure Functions is region-specific).
Erik Ralston | TrustRadius Reviewer

Google Cloud CDN

  • Unable to use any kind of code to show different content.
  • Absence of cloud workers as provided by Cloudfront, Cloudflare and Akamai.
  • No support for dynamic routing.

Great support from the team whenever we're stuck. Very proactive in resolving issues and also making changes as per the requirements of the organization.

I didn't have the need to use support from Google when I was either testing or setting up my website. Information was easily found by searching online if I needed to, and the options that I needed to install or enable were there on the setup page. Honestly, I was a former systems administrator so most of this stuff is not challenging for me.

Alternatives Considered

Azure CDN

More user friendly and it’s so easy to learn, the prices may be close to each other, but the service is excellent.

Google Cloud CDN

We have limited software developers and don't have the need for a big cloud service provider along with their costs. Google Cloud CDN brings to usr, reliability and brand familiarity. Google Cloud CDN also doesn't bother us with pitches or 1000 emails about the products. We went and signed up for it, without dealing with a pushy salesperson.

Return on Investment

Azure CDN

  • Azure CDN reduced origin instance load by removing the need to constantly serve large numbers of static files, meaning applications can be deployed with smaller/fewer instances.
  • Azure CDN reduces apparent load times to customers by serving cached files out of POPs in the local region of those clients, instead of requiring those clients to make multiple, lengthy requests through to the origin servers.

Google Cloud CDN

  • Google Cloud CDN has worked great as a tool to provide more reliable and faster interactive web experiences such as with e-learning sites.
  • The product can require additional training costs, even for experienced IT administrators.
  • Overall, ongoing costs can also be prohibitive for organizations with smaller web presences.
