If your solution falls within their standard use case or you have Office 365 - then it makes total sense. If you need a lot of customization or have a really specific business process that causes you to deviate from the standard flow it usually makes more sense to create a custom solution

It is great for Windows authentication and works with many other applications. In fact, the FDIC was here this past week and they were impressed in our utilization of the DigitalPersona software. It does add an extra level of security here at the bank and that is very important considering all of the financial data that we have here.

Pros

Azure Multi-Factor Authentication (Discontinued)

  • Ease of use
  • Interoperability
  • Industry standard

HID DigitalPersona (formerly Crossmatch)

  • Super fast to recognize fingerprint and authenticate .
  • Accurate with a wide area of fingerprint. Most windows laptops with built in fingerprint scanners only recognize a small area of print.
  • Units are inexpensive.
  • Quick and easy to install server software and client hardware.
  • When workstations were upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the software continued working flawlessly.

Cons

Azure Multi-Factor Authentication (Discontinued)

  • It can be difficult to work with when deviating off the standard use cases

HID DigitalPersona (formerly Crossmatch)

  • Multiple domains - DigitalPersona struggles with multiple domains. Since the solution is licensed per domain, migrating users between domains can be troublesome to keep licensed. Additionally, migrating to a new domain removes the AD leaf objects that store all digital persona information, essentially wiping out and credentials or other stored information.
  • Password change - DigitalPersona can be confusing to update when a stored password for a website is updated. The password is entered, and then the user is redirected to the websites password change page. Users must then authenticate with a Digital persona credential again before being prompted by Digital Persona to update the password. If the user is allowed to change the password manually through the websites page, this will lead to what is stored in Digital Persona being out of sync with the new password, and eventually account lockouts.
  • Terminal Server - DigitalPersona has performance issues when utilized on a high-traffic terminal server. Often it causes big CPU spikes as well as hanging sessions upon disconnect.

Two things.1- because of the hardware investment we already made in all the fingerprint readers.2 - I have yet to see a competitor with a similar concept.

I think there are still fundamental enhancements needed to be added to the management consoles and I think there ought to be a Centralized, Windows Based "Thick" Management Application instead of individual utilities which vary from MMCs, Scripts, Wizards, etc.

Extremely poor; I've never encountered such. Professional Services completely dropped us for months. Crossmatch tech support seems like it has 3 techs tops! No response to emails, calls, the absolute worst! I will never recommend DP to anyone.

Could use tools to audit license usage at a more granular level as to allow an administrator to free up licenses from users whom seldom use their biometrics to login.

Honestly, they are very similar as is much of their offerings. It really comes down to which ecosystem are you already invested in? It doesn't make a lot of sense to try and interop with every cloud vendor - pick one and use them. While there used to be substantial differences in the cloud platforms, they are at basic parity now

We have used One Identity for software tokens. The Defender software tokens were originally included with our bundle and work pretty well for integration into the AnyConnect VPN client with Cisco. All that said, we use the two products for different applications and DP does what it does very well.

Return on Investment

Azure Multi-Factor Authentication (Discontinued)

  • Overall, it's a really good value compared to building a custom solution that you have to maintain

  • All other 2-factor authentication software we looked at were a subscription based platforms.
  • The DigitalPersona staff was very efficient in the implantation process which allowed our staff to move on to other issues.
  • The technical staff spends less time on account lockouts now since the end-user is now capable of resolving lockouts themselves.
