Centrify / Idaptive (discontinued, superseded by Idira Identity Platform) vs. Opal.dev

Centrify is a great solution for anyone looking to start using Office 365. It is also a great solution for anyone wanting to provide their users with an SSO solution using OAUTH, Federation, or SAML for any hosted service. If you are looking to use Centrify for MDM but you aren't using a hosted/hybrid email solution such as Office 365, there are better on-premise options that should be explored.

I am frustrated that my organization chose to adopt Opal for our access management tool. It is extremely difficult to use, due to bugs and basic functionality missing. Engineers are not given write access to production resources, so every change must flow through Opal.

This involves writing an IAM policy by hand for every request, because it is far too difficult to find an existing role in the system, and requests must the narrowly tailored only to allow the exact operation requested. Opal makes this process much more difficult because it lacks basic functionality for end users, such as: -Ability to modify an existing IAM role

-Ability to view existing IAM roles

-Ability to delete duplicate Opal roles

-Lack of IAM role templates

-Poor error messages when attempting JSON policy fails validation

In general, each Opal request takes 5-10 minutes because you need to be very explicit with every API action you are requesting, which then needs to be repeated multiple times because it is very hard to get everything correct the first time, which then requires a new round of reviews. This is partially because AWS IAM roles can be tricky to get right, but Opal provides no functionality to make this easier.

• Occasionally, I get logged out of Gmail, sometimes in the middle of an email. I'm not sure why it happens, but I think it has something to do with timing out. Which is strange because I'm on email all day. Not sure why.

• Poor ability to search for existing Opal roles
• Repeated reliability issues - IAM role creation breaks far too often
• Cryptic error messages when IAM JSON is incorrect

Centrify is central to creating efficiency and safety for our clients and internally. To remove it would cause a massive disturbance in the lives of our employees and our clients.

The support staff thus far has been very helpful. At times I feel they are driving the process forward without my intervention or constant reminder, which is nice to have in a company for a change. Most support seems to be a hassle but so far Centrify appears to treat your project as their own project.

Centrify offered us more for our money by being more than just an SSO platform. There were several other features included such as MDM and MFA. This started other initiatives for us and felt the other solutions we evaluated would not have been able to provide.

• Centrify has made the job of the administrator easier by allowing us to manage SSO and MDM all in one.
• Centrify has made it easy for the end user by using SSO and not having to remember their passwords for multiple applications, networks, etc.
• Centrify has made it easy for an end user to enroll their own device which in return adds their device to the corporate network and sets up corporate email on their device.
