When it comes to security on the edge of your network (downstream) Cisco's IOS security features provide pretty much everything you need when it comes to securing your network, network devices, and access. I would absolutely recommend Cisco switches due to many reasons, but a big reason is security.

    Trellix (FireEye + McAfee)

It provides great web security and will protect your devices against viruses and malware when paired with other security software and hardware. For instance, we have multiple layers of security set up so if McAfee misses something then one of our other barriers will catch the infection or intrusion before it reaches the network. I would not suggest using this product as a standalone agent because I do not think it will be as effective when working by itself. The dashboard also makes it convenient to manage devices, policies, and settings from wherever you are so it's an ideal solution for any IT department to use. I would just suggest using something else as a backup so your network isn't left vulnerable.

    Cons

    Cisco

    • Cisco could provide an initial set up script for those are not used to the CLI (Command Line Interface). With that initial script, people could easily deploy the security features instead of having to learn how to use the commands.
    • The web interface that Cisco provides with the routers, although it’s useful to set up the security features, it could also have some sort of tutorials to help people understand the main concepts of iOS security.
    • You have to license iOS security separately from the main OS. For that reason, sometimes it tends to be a little expensive if you have a small business.

    Trellix (FireEye + McAfee)

    • The amount of false detections especially the negative ones needed to be reduced.
    • It requires more optimization. It tends to make the PCs slower.
    • It almost doesn't have the ability to heal. This is very important as we need our sensitive data to be recoverable.
    • It doesn't have any free scanning functionality. Our users using personal machines cannot scan in case of an incident. This could be added like Malwarebytes.

        Support Rating

        Cisco

Cisco has the best Support team that gives us 24/7 support as we need. Cisco has huge detailed documentation for design, implementation, and troubleshooting all areas of the IOS security. There are many communities discussing all Cisco devices and solutions for studying groups and for customers to share their stories, technical problem and solutions.

The support is pretty good, and I haven't had any issues with getting the highest quality technical support when there are issues. Tech support representatives that I have dealt with know the product quite well and have solved many issues that I have had with the product in the past. The only issue I have with support is that it can be quite expensive.

        Alternatives Considered

        Cisco

I also like HP Procurve. It is my choice when the customer cannot afford Cisco. Cisco is better all round but HP is the only other [product] I will use if I have a choice.

It has fewer false positive issues. It also provides more compatibility with a variety of different OS versions. The sensor installation is easy to use, update and maintain as well as the reporting capabilities that it can offer are more robust than the ones that other competitors have. It's very intuitive and it can scale up as the company grows.

        Return on Investment

        Cisco

        • Cisco iOS security helped our business deploy a relatively safe solution for a small amount of money.
        • If you don’t have enough budget to invest in a robust and expensive firewall solution, you can safely use Cisco iOS security to protect your branch or remote office without compromise your network.
        • Because Cisco iOS security uses a simple command-line based interface, you can deploy standardized scripts and keep the operational costs low.

        • I don't think one has to worry about the security of data and has peace of mind after installing McAfee Endpoint Security as it does a tremendous job as an antivirus.
        • The machines slowing down due to the software being resource-heavy has definitely led to a loss in productivity as the loading time of other software increases.
