One of the scenarios where we can apply Cisco System Manager is when our company has the need to manage, monitor and support mobile devices and portable computing equipment, allowing us centralized management and remote support for devices. If we have devices apple system manager has more features. A scenario where it does not apply is when we have mobile devices that are not compatible with the SM software.

ManageEngine Mobile Device Manager Plus

As far as MDM solutions go, this one does all of the main features you would need. The price point is extremely competitive, but with that, there are areas for improvement. ManageEngine MDM Plus is well suited for small businesses that want to easily manage their devices and be able to track them. It may not be as well suited if you have more than a couple hundred devices and go through a lot of user and device changes.

Pros

Cisco Meraki SM

  • We can create templates for our mobile devices that make new hardware deployments a breeze.
  • Pushing out new with Apple Business Manager is easy and efficient.
  • We get tons of real-time information on our devices and useful historical information and logs.
  • Kiosk and Single App mode is great for single purpose tablets.

Cons

Cisco Meraki SM

  • Limited ability for "command line" functions. For example, we had a laptop that was stolen and showed to be online, but we could not wipe it. We were able to access a command prompt, but it would not accept DISKPART or FORMAT commands to try and make the PC unusable.
  • The GPS location is not terribly accurate and frequently it "guesses" location based off of an IP address rather than actually activating the GPS on the device. This makes tracking lost/stolen devices very difficult.
  • Difficulty getting devices to correctly show their status in the dashboard. For example, I can have a PC that is online and connected to the Internet, but shows to be offline in the dashboard. Only after refreshing many times would it indicate that the PC was actually online, thus allowing me to administer it.

  • Email enrollment: the e-mail enrollment option for devices is inconsistent, and this is an area that would seem like an easy fix. In most of the cases where we've tried to enroll devices via email, the text is incredibly small and the hyperlinks are either not visible or not easily clickable unless you zoom in a lot. When requiring staff the enroll their own device, you essentially have to rely on the SMS enrollment option.
  • SMS enrollment credits: the option for SMS enrollment actually works great. However, where it needs to be improved is how the credits are provisioned. There is no way to actually purchase additional credits. When you first sign up for ManageEngine MDM Plus, you are given a set amount of credits. Once those run out, it is a huge pain to try to obtain more. It should be possible to be able to simply order additional credits.
  • Management console interface: the management console has a lot of excellent features, but the design has a lot of room for improvement. The navigation menus are a little confusing. For example, areas for enrollment, inventory, and device management all have lists of managed devices, but each has different information. It should be easy to simply click on a device and tell whether it's already been enrolled, etc. without the need for jumping around separate pages.
  • Client user management: when you enroll a device via an end-user, you must add a user ID and email address. If you ever want to update those, you can't. Further, you can't seem to be able to delete users altogether. When employees leave and new ones are hired, phone numbers tend to get flipped around. This has caused a few headaches in enrolling/removing devices.

It has is easy to use overall and is very powerful. The learning curve for the system is very small and I have found it easy to train members of our team to use it. It can fit any size organization and the support is excellent. The ROI is well worth it. If you have a multiplatform ecosystem, this tool is near perfect.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Meraki SM

The only product I have used that is similar is Apple Configurator. While a powerful solution, it requires physical access to the devices which is not always possible, especially on a large site. Meraki is able to achieve many of the same functions as the Apple configurator but without ever needing to physically access the device, other than initial setup and registration.

Scalability

Cisco Meraki SM

Cisco Meraki SM 8.6
Based on 5 answers
It’s scalable up to a point and will scale well from small to a medium business, however, as a business grows and policies get more mature or detailed, you might have to later upgrade to a more appropriate enterprise solution such as MaaS360 or AirWatch. This solution however, will last quite a long tome for a growing business.

  • Our immediate take away has been a savings of thousands a year in MDM fees. We were paying around $3.00 a device with our previous MDM and our average with Meraki is about $1.88 per device. That while providing far more functionality than our previous provider.
