CorelCAD

CorelCAD is ideally suited for creating mechanical 2D drawings for metal parts and assemblies. It is equally suited for architectural drawings. It is less well suited for creating 3D models. It also works well as an intermediary to convert between different CAD systems.CorelCAD offers a compelling and relatively low-cost solution that covers the vast majority of business needs creating both internal use drawings, drawings for fabricated parts, and creating more elaborate drawings to incorporate within CorelDraw documents.

SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS does well with complex parts and assemblies. It also works well with iterative development processes and analysis. If you plan to share the assembly with multiple people for manufacturing purposes, I wouldn’t use any other product. Their manufacturing network is extensive. It is too complicated to learn for simple sketches where precision is not important. For example, I was drawing a stepstool that would fold and it was faster to sketch it out on paper.

Pros

CorelCAD

  • 2D and 3D mechanical drawings
  • Interchange with AutoCAD users and other CAD users.
  • Publish technical data sheets and drawings.
  • Creating PDF documents

SOLIDWORKS

  • The collaborative work environment is a cool and useful feature where groups of people can work on the same model at the same time, and SOLIDWORKS ensures that you don't overwrite each other's work.
  • The ease and amount of customization options are very useful for creating a personalized and intuitive user interface, whether SOLIDWORKS is your native CAD package or not.
  • It is very easy to quickly edit a model you have already created. The software allows sketch and feature editing without having to take the time to actually enter the sketch/feature environment.
  • The use of configurations and configurations-specific dimensions in the same sketch is very useful for creating different forms of the same part

Cons

CorelCAD

  • For those unfamiliar with AutoCAD the interface can be a little overwhelming.
  • Expanded 3D functionality

SOLIDWORKS

  • To date, the baked in surfacing tools lack power compared to dedicated surfacing software.
  • In a similar vein, the core modeling kernel is not owned by SOLIDWORKS themselves and so there exists limitations with regards to implementing certain modeling/math.
  • SOLIDWORKS is playing catchup to other online vendors of CAD (notable OnShape); instead of being the once leader, they are being forced to compare themselves. This, however, may work to their advantage and in turn allow them to produce a better on-line CAD tool.

Corel's support has always been outstanding. Technical support is always available to assist with installation and licensing issues and there is generally additional free assistance for a time period after purchase. Corel also offers online tutorials and other self-help resources. Ongoing and available support is one of the outstanding features Corel has always provided.

SOLIDWORKS as a company seems to want you to be good at their program to encourage you to continue using it and tell others of the experience. There is a ton of support from the community, as well as from the reseller (we use GoEngineer). There is an official forum that is very active, as well as tutorials built right into the program to help you get started, and even into some advanced features.

Alternatives Considered

CorelCAD

AutoCAD compares favorably to TurboCAD at a comparable price point to its mid-line product. TurboCAD offers both higher level and lower level products that expand on the capabilities of CorelCAD, but for the majority of users, CorelCAD offers a good compromise of features to price point while maintaining a structure that will be familiar to AutoCAD users. When compared with AutoCAD products, it aligns most closely with AutoCAD LT and compares favorably in terms of functions and features. AutoCAD has moved primarily to a subscription model which I personally do not like. With CorelCAD, buy it, own it, and upgrade when new features are needed.

SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS is better in terms of design speed of 3D parts. It is also better for pieces of high technical detail. Other CAD programs do not have a simulation of forces, SOLIDWORKS does. The user interfaces are, in my opinion, friendlier and easier to use than other programs. In general visual quality of design, SOLIDWORKS is much better than the competition.

Return on Investment

CorelCAD

  • CorelCAD easily pays for itself even when not a primary product.
  • Due to its similarity to AutoCAD, it's a reasonable solution with a shortened learning curve for existing AutoCAD users.

SOLIDWORKS

  • It has been really positive because it has allowed us to create incredible 3D mechanical parts for our customers.
  • It is not a cheap software, however, the cost-benefit we have experienced has been amazing when considering the product quality we have been able to submit.
  • The only negative impact we have had is with the capacitation of our team since this is not an easy software to learn, which means we need to spend time and money for our team to use it.
