DaVinci Resolve

Resolve is great and offers so many neat features, like camera tracking, expansive control over your image's color, and an amazing noise reduction plugin. This is a great option for coloring, and I'd recommend most production teams looking for a robust coloring software to look into Resolve and give it a go. It's worth it, even though you'll have to break away from working in Premiere Pro, etc.If you don't have the money to pay for the full version, it might be better to just use the free version (which is still great. It's a steal honestly) and perhaps down the road pay for the full thing.

screenflow

When training others to use a software application, I find this is amazingly helpful to accomplish using screenflow. The application allows me to video what I am doing in the application while explaining it in details. There are other uses of course, one that I found was to capture myself talking through students' research papers/thesis and explain where changes need to be made. Of course, MS Word has the tracking changes option and a professor can go through sentence by sentence - the downfall of this is that students #1 - do not always understand what is being suggested as we all cut back on words when typed out versus spoken. #2 - students do not always read the added comments thoroughly. Viewers watch the video and listen to a voice quicker than reading remarks. The viewing and voice, in my opinion, are the greatest part of the end product provided to viewers. This tool can assist anyone's work that trains others...be it industry or educational fields.

Pros

DaVinci Resolve

  • DaVinci Resolve does color correction via masking really well. The mask tracking feature is much faster and accurate than similar software applications. These are strengths for DaVinci Resolve, as they appeal to both the professional and amateur editor.
  • DaVinci Resolve's free version is extremely robust. This means that anyone who is unsure about the software can really do an in-depth test run with the majority of features, and evaluate if it is for them before making a purchase.
  • DaVinci Resolve is user-friendly. It's extremely easy to adjust default settings and customize your fades, transitions, etc. exactly how you want them, rather than having to adjust each time you add them to the timeline. This is a strength for Resolve, as it leaves users feeling more empowered and saves time.

Cons

DaVinci Resolve

  • The interface can be confusing.
  • Not as well integrated with outside software as some competitors.
  • Noise reduction only available in the paid version.

screenflow

  • The on-screen text options are limited and inferior to competitors
  • Transitions aren't as easy to use as they could be. They need to be modified in the preferences pane, which is strange.
  • Green screen settings can be fiddly; but this is really splitting hairs. It's hard to tell what's their fault and what's mine.

Da Vinci Resolve is up there amongst the big, professional video editing packages like Apple's FinalCutPro and Adobe Premier Pro. To just be included in this league, the package needs to have a plethora of features that the common man does not need. In essence, this overwhelming amount of features makes the product tricky to learn, but once you have the hang of it, it is a dream.

Not only do they have classes available in Los Angeles, but they'll also allow you to work from home with the manual and demo materials, and then let you test out to get a certification. They get back to you quickly when you email, and they've got a "family" approach to customer service, they make you feel like you're important to them.

It works well and fits into my workflow. The tools are much easier and straightforward to work with. Other video editing tools like Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro are simply too complicated for this type of task.

Alternatives Considered

DaVinci Resolve

For a small business, DaVinci's price point (free / $300) makes it a strong competitor to Adobe Premiere. FCP costs roughly the same, but then DaVinci's color correction is better. If you do not need all the color correction options, then even the free version could be an option.

screenflow

Screenflow offers a clean interface and intuitive tools like I have not seen across other video editing products, often times because of the many complexities that are delivered with video editing software. I have used many many video editing tools in my past and this one seemed to be a perfect blend of simple must-have features, combined with a little taste of the advanced tools that you expect to see in higher-end products like Aftereffects.

Return on Investment

DaVinci Resolve

  • The ROI was well worth it. Our videos have never looked better.
  • Color Correction has also taken us less time than before. It's been fantastic.
  • Making videos faster and better looking is a definite win-win!

screenflow

  • This allows me to make a presentation once and then distribute it widely. This increases efficiency and effectiveness.
  • It allows me to demonstrate apps and concepts, not just talk about them. This allows clients to grasp concepts much more readily.
